We'll be Camping Friday (Aug 1) and Saturday (Aug 2) nights at Hackwood State Forest Campground, 2 miles north of Wolverine  (Hackwood GPS coordinates[masked], [masked]  Map to Hackwood Campground).  This is a primitive campground  - full campground facilities are available at Burt Park. First come first serve on camping at Haakwood.  Make your reservations as early as possible for Burt Lake.  We will try and camp in the north unit at Haakwood.  We have mastered the Saturday night potluck as a group, so bring on your creations.  (Grocery store in Indian River for those last minute creations...)  Burt Lake folks can potluck with us at Haakwood.

Very last minute decision to try and join this weekend trip. Don't have a campsite and wanted to know if anybody had a site they would be willing to share. I car camp (no tent - just need a site I can park at). Would be driving up from Holland and hope to do both Friday and Saturday night.

I need to drive because after I pitch my tent I'm heading to Petosky to meet with a friend late Friday afternoon. I have room for two more kayaks. Call[masked] if interested.

    1 · July 30

    • Maggie

Peg - did you find someone to share a site yet? I'm a newbie and was unsure of doing this trip alone. If I can share a site I'd feel better about making this trip. I would be Coming up from Holland.

      July 30

I would like to share with a small tent if possible. I will also be staying one night

Beginning of a 9 day vacation for us. Another couple will join us at Sturgeon Valley Campground (4.5 miles south of Haakwood - on the Sturgeon) Friday & Saturday nights. (We'll be pulling our fifth-wheel trailer with the kayak trailer behind it and likely won't fit in anywhere at Haakwood.) We plan to kayak with WMKC on Saturday (total of 4 in our small group) and join the crowd for Saturday night potluck. Leaving Sunday AM for the Porkies!

Hey Steve, we are doing a similar trip to the UP. Are you guys planning to paddle the Jordan on Friday instead? That is what we're doing. If so, let me know so we can paddle together. My number is[masked] 7054. I don't believe I have your number either.

      July 27, 2014

    • Steve (Stephen) S.

Kathy - We might be interested in a Friday Jordan River trip if we arrive early enough. I'll call you when we get there.

Does anyone have knowledge of the Bear river? I was thinking of heading up early Friday and paddling it. However it looks questionable if there is enough water in it. If anyone has any information or would like to do this let me know. I have a new Karma I am itching to get into some WW.

      Thanks for the input JC.

      July 29, 2014

    • Glenn R.

Yeah, shallow, full of wood & trash in many places. The whitewater run at the end is for "experts" & is nice. You'd be better off paddling the upper & or middle section of the Boardman. I've (also) heard the MAPLE is nice, but have ZERO knowledge of it...

      July 29, 2014

  • Vickie D.

I know the Black River well up in Onaway not that far, is anyone interest for a Friday? I can be up there Thursday night if anyone is interested.

Okay Gary, Christina, and Bill, and whoever else might be interested; According to the "Canoeing Michigan Rivers" book, Graves Crossing Road to Rogers Road looks like a very nice run. I'm guessing it would take us about 3 to 3.5 hours if we take out that final mile slow mile before the lake. I've never been on the Jordan, so does anyone have more insight?[masked]

Would anyone mind filling me in on the differences between Hackwood, and Burke Lake Campgrounds?

    February 9, 2014

  • Jim & Juli G.

    Contacted Sturgeon Valley Campground:

Thanks for inquiring about us. Our rates are $28 a night. We give a $3 off group rate of 10 or more units. Late check out is $1 an hour. We are located right on the river. You have to walk to it tho to put your kayaks in.
Checkout time is 1p.m. One unit per site. we allow two tents if one tent is for adult and the other for their children. The rate is $28 a night for 2 adults and 2 children under age of 16.

This is a little expensive if we can't share sites....

    March 16, 2014

    • Steve (Stephen) S.

Contacted Sturgeon Valley Campground and reserved two sites for Friday and Saturday nights. We are traveling with another couple and will kayak the Sturgeon on Saturday, but headed for Porcupine Mountains Sunday morning, so we'll miss the Jordan River outing.
Pulling our fifth-wheel trailer - with their pop-up camper behind. Could be quite odd looking....

We just got off the Surgeon River. Put in at South White Rd., and got out at the North White bridge. First time ever floating on a mostly frozen river, floating with and sometimes on top of ice slabs. Hacked through with a sledgehammer. So beautiful beautiful and very cool...!!!

I am having trouble finding something I can join. Is there another place I can go to get experience and enjoy the ride? I am new and either it starts on a Friday (I have a new job and don't want to rock the boat and ask for time off early). Or it's not for beginners. Getting discouraged and heart-broken (again).
