Full Sturgeon Moon Paddle

The last Full Moon of Summer is the 10th so .... let's go!

Veterans of the Full Moon Floats know that this is a very easy run.  There is no need to spot as we will be on the backwater of Middleville dam.  We choose this location because there are boats and waterskis on the Cascade backwater this time of year.

We paddle about an hour upstream to the big log jam chute - or farther if you are ambitious.

Though conditions for paddling are Class 1 with an almost undetectable current, the dark adds a class.  It won't even be that dark this time. Be sensible and safe.  Bring a light or headlight, we usually don't fire them up in the moonlight, but it is needed on board.  Everyone appreciates the red light option to make it easy on the night vision.

Paddles in at 7:30 pm  - come at 7 pm or earlier to unload.

Afterward we will gather at Champs to enjoy the deck and your favorite beverages and as we saw last year, the moon will probably rise about the time we get our food.

About weather conditions.....

Hope for a clear sky or patchy cloud cover so we can enjoy the full moon!  Dark + rain is not fun and will cause a cancellation.  Just check in with me if you have concern.

A note about this location - we unload on the west side of the river, but will need to park on the east side (the bridge is right there).  Please help everyone else unload to make it quick. There is a concert in the Gazebo on the East side of the river Friday night which will complicate parking-but only a little bit.  You may have to park in the church lot up the hill (east 1/4 mile from the river).  If this sounds confusing, do not worry, it will be perfectly clear when you get there.

For the first time paddlers with WMKC - we help each other unload, then there will be a brief safety talk and a quick group picture before we get in the water.  Also, for safety and enjoyment of all involved, we save our alcohol for off river locations.

Great, serene paddle. Smooth, with the best wildlife I've seen to-date. A muskrat taking vegetation to his/her home, Blue Herons, Cranes, etc. Glorious. One question, what river was I paddling?

My apologies for not changing my RSVP. I had thought I would be able to kayak starting late July but realized not until next season...and forgot I had signed up...missed reminders when laptop went into the shop. I am sure it was lovely!

Thanks Michal Ann! That answers most of my questions. I took my new kayak out on the rogue tonight. Just threw it in the back of my sprinter van which has lots of room for kayaks and put in at the park by the dam and paddled up river for a short way. Boat performed well and was very stable and was easy to get in and out of. Sure beats the Pelican I tried! See you there!

Just got my Kayak it's a Future Beach Mariner 10.4. Prob not the greatest but seems to be stable. Got a paddle and a PDF w/ a waterproof phone case and a waterproof bag. Wondering what kind of light I'm supposed to get. And where to get? Also not sure exactly what happens...I know we paddle upstream but do go back downstream? Gather at restaurant in Middleville? What kind of clothing do you wear for this event? Same as daytime? Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks! Joe

Don't need a light for this one. It won't be dark. A headlight with a red light option is perfect for these trips in the future. Also glow Sticks. You are more likely to need sunscreen this time of year. We go up then turn around and float back. Takes maybe 90 minutes. Lite current. Gather at river before. Gather at Champs after. Wear clothing of your choice.

Sounds like you have the basics covered for equipment. See you there.

This has been such a great group and I have enjoyed the floats. My husband and I are beginning a new chapter in our lives and are moving to North Carolina. May we meet up on a river again.... Andi
