This is how we roll... upside down...

Time shifted to Thursday due to weather.

This year we will do this on Gun Lake to bring it closer to more people.  I will get there by about 5 PM, and late comers are welcome, before about 7:00 PM. Weather will be a factor, particularly since this is a safety oriented event.  So I may cancel with less than 24 hours notice.

We will demonstrate all of the following techniques, then split into groups and practice until everyone has had their fill.

Wet Exit

• With Skirt

• Without Skirt

•  PFD 101 - Finding out if you really know that PFD and how to wear it.

• Emptying water from capsized boat in deep water

• Assisted

• Non Assisted

•  Assisted Rescue

• Scissor Method

• Cross Bow Method

I will have an extra boat to lend, and others might also.

As new information becomes available, I will append it here, so check back regularly.

Update:  I moved the put in to the Allegan County park so we can get to some deeper water around Blackbird Island.  Deep water makes this more realistic.  Thanks to Deb Masselink, who will be our floating SAG wagon.

What a fun and helpful evening. Thanks for all your
effort. Who would ever have thought scrambling back into a capsized kayak involved such gyrations.

I think nothing can be more satisfying to a teacher than seeing the entire class engaged. Learning, discussing and performing. Thank you to all who attended, and a second thank you to the folks who searched for and Rachel, who found my lost sunglasses. :-)

It helped that your straps was floating. Thank you for taking the time to teach us! I learned so much and feel more confident as well!

Good call, JC - it's been raining here for the last hour with no letup in sight..... had a few distant rumbles of thunder, too.

OK, I like rain, but not purple rain.

That was one of the worst storms we've experienced in 19 years! 2' waves, 50-60 mph wind; and lots of loose boats. The east side got 1" hail. Tree branches (small ones) down all over. Not a good night to be on Gun Lake :-(

Bummer, seems like same thing happened last year. I can't make Thursday, but am very interested in this type of instruction. Hope there will be another.

Excellent timing for the update, just BEFORE I loaded my boat. Whew! See you Thursday.

Is this good for a beginner??

    June 19, 2014

    • JC R.

Actually, I wish every beginner could attend. This is geared toward people who have never fallen out of their boat.

And everyone of us who have. *grins*

Sorry, I have to miss this. Please let me know when another instruction is available (I'm sure you will), or maybe a place for one-on-one instruction.

I always thought rolling... upside down, was the easy part, and that the real challenge was rolling... back right side up. Whatever the truth of the matter, I look forward to instruction.

Rolling back up is Roger Starring's department. And to be perfectly honest, I am finding that technique to be quite challenging. We had fun with this last time we did it though.

Just a quick reminder, please ensure your boat has some type of flotation for these exercises. A dry hatch, foam, or float bags all work. In the event you need to borrow a boat, I also have a couple of extras.

As I recall, we almost lost one last time. It was a whitewater boat and the bags were not in it. Very difficult to empty.
