Manistee River/Boardman River Camping Weekend June 14 - 16

Plan on joining us for the first Big Weekend Campout.   I am posting this very early so you can put it on your calendar and reserve your site.  I have copied most of last years details. There may be a few detail changes so check back.  I will probably add the lower Platte, for example on Friday.  We will have night floats on the lake.

Due to the large number of people we have had for these main camping trips we will be on the Duck Lake side (showers and electric sites) I am hoping to get the big one on the corner as usual.

Reservations open up on Dec 15.  I have been watching and sites are going fast on reservation opening day for this campground this year. Please reserve early, list your site and also make your sharing arrangements in the comments sections below.    For the newcomers when you reserve some one will likely ask to share and split the cost with you (or you can ask them)

Of course there will be an enormous potluck on Saturday night.  You will bring your most entertaining adventure story (PG13) to share with the group.  (You were instructed to shoot snakes if they dropped in your canoe, you were lost on a dark and stormy night, your Grandma called and...)  Yes.  We want to hear that one.

Paddling the Manistee River on Saturday and the Boardman River on Sunday. Camping at Interlochen State Park

Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Equipment: Summer Paddle atire/PFD

Manistee River: Hodenpyl Dam Access to Red Bridge/Saturday, June 15, 2012/3 to 4 hour paddle 11:30 am put in. Leave Interlochen State Campground at 10:00 am

This stretch of the Manistee follows along the north country trail, primarily through wild areas, with a peppy current, and a few Class I ripples. It's a favorite with many paddlers because the the beautiful forest with steep cliffs. The river is wide, and can easily accommodate large groups. The Manistee is a very easy river to paddle but it does have several tricky eddy currents around the tight turns. This is easily overcome by properly attacking the turn and paddling a bit harder to overcome the current. Easily done by even the most inexperienced paddler.

If you are not camping at Interlochen State Park for the weekend follow the directions below to Hodenpyl Dam Access:

Follow US 131 to exit 176 (M115) west towards Frankfort. Take M115 through Cadillac and on through the town of Messick. Counting from the railroad tracks in the center of Messick continue 1.5 miles on M115 to Hodenply Dam Road on the left. You can recognize Hodenpyl dam road by the big trout picture up on the south west hillside. Follow Hodenpyl Dam road for 4 miles to a dirt road on the left. Look for the WMKC signs! Turn onto the dirt road and drive another 1/4 mile to the Put-In parking.

Boardman River Paddle: Brown Pond Dam to Beitner Bridge Access/Sunday, June 16, 2012/3 to 4 hour paddle Leave Interlochen State Campground at 10:00 - 10:30

The Boardman River is one of Michigan's most senic and beautiful rivers. The water is crystal clear. We'll put in at Brown pond Dam at  11:00 am after spotting our vehicles on our way to the put in. This is an approximately 10 mile paddle. Time: 3 plus 1 hour depending on the number of stops we make. Shorter trips are possible and we can sort that out as we go. There are several access sites. To me....the Boardman is one of Michigan's most beautiful rivers. You don't want to miss this paddle!! Skill Level: - Beginner/Intermediate. Beitner Rapids below Beitner bridge is class II. Whoever wants to do that section can. A few plan too. If not, then Beitner bridge is the pull-out. - Average gradient approx 8 feet per mile. Fast but not overwhelming. Anyone can do the Boardman with no problems but if you don't like about 15 minutes of fast and challenging water then Beitner bridge access is where you'll get out.

If you are not camping at Interlochen State Campground and coming up for the day then follow the directions to the put-in:

Brown Pond Dam 3270 Brown Bridge Road, Traverse City, MI 49686.  Take-Out Beitner Bridge How to get to the Brown Pond Dam access on Saturday morning: 1. Drive north on US131 to exit 176 on M115 and go west towards Frankfort. 2. Just before to get to the town of Mesick turn right onto M37 and head north for 20.4 miles to Chums corner. 3. Chums corner is where US31 and M37 meet. 4. Turn right onto Beitner Rd.  Look for the West Michigan Kayaking Club signs 5. Follow Beitner Rd 1.6 miles until you reach the Keystone, Beitner, W River Rd intersection. 7. Turn right on W River Rd. and follow for 6.6 miles to the put-in at Brown Bridge Dam. 8. Note within the 6.6 miles W River becomes E River and finally crosses Garfield Rd and becomes Brown Bridge Road. 9. If all else fails, just look for Brown Bridge Pond signs.

Interlochen State Campground: June 14-16, 2012/7:00 PM

Camping will be at Interlochen State Park in Interlochen.  Interlochen State Park, M-137 Interlochen, MI 49643.

You'll need to call the state park[masked] or visit this website to make your reservation:   http://www.midnrreservations.com/ You'll need a State Vehicle pass to get into the park. .

Unable to make it to the boardman river. Looks like it will be a perfect day for kayaking up there.

Great time! Fun. The Manistee was an easy paddle, the Boardman more challenging and very exciting. Leaders planned and executed flawlessly. Potluck was incredibly good. Brian's birthday celebration kept us laughing. irth;cdh w

AWESOME weekend! Good friends both old and new, a potluck to write home about... fantastic paddles, especially the rapids on the Boardman. I may have taken a swim at the end, but I can't wait to run it again! Thanks to everyone who put forth the extra time & effort behind the scenes to make it all run smoothly... Really enjoyed the Upper Platte River paddle on Saturday and the Boardman River paddle on Sunday.....both were running fast and had plenty of challenges which were somewhat elevated by the number of paddlers and low bridge clearance on Sunday.

Someone below mentioned the dates are wrong?? I noticed it said 2012 but assumed it just wasn't updated from last year. Saturday is the paddle down the manistee river starting at 1130 am correct? I'm coming from Grand Rapids so I don't want to go somewhere and be lost! :)

    June 13, 2013

    • Sarah B.

Ok good. Also what's the best way to find directions? Just punch in hopendyl road in my gps?

      June 13, 2013

    • Michal Ann Benedict E.

The directions above will work well when you get there. I think it was last year when someones GPS took them to the other side of the dam - about 100 yards 20 minutes away to drive around. :)
