  • This location is shown only to members

Camping Friday (Aug 9) and Saturday (Aug 10) nights at Hackwood State Forest Campground, 2 miles north of Wolverine.  First come first serve on camping.  We will try and camp in the north unit.  We have mastered the Saturday night potluck as a group, so bring on your creations.  (Grocery store in Indian River for those last minute creations...)

Saturday: Sturgeon River 11:00 AM

Sunday: Jordan River 10:00 AM - Leaving Campground - Meet at Put In at 10:45

Sturgeon:

The Sturgeon drops 10 feet per mile and offers some very fun twisty/turny dodge the tubers action. It's a fun river, but not recommended for first year beginners.

Put-In: Wolverine Park

Pull-outs:  2 hr Rondo Rd   4 hr Fisher Rd

Equipment: PFD Required, Sunscreen Repellent, Water, Lunch

Procedure: Please be a little early and stage your gear at the park.  Drivers be prepared to roll and let the organizers know what pullout you wish to park at.  Volunteers for shuttle drivers are highly appreciated, and earn the "Guide" title in your profile.

Once the drivers return, we will provide a safety brief, then do a group photo before anyone goes on the river.

Jordan:

The Jordan is a beautiful and fun river, with overhanging cedars, and flocks of Cedar Waxwings, plus a fun little pair of bridge tubes to play in.

Put-In: Graves Rd

Pull-outs:  2 hr

Equipment: PFD Recommended, Sunscreen Repellent, Water, Lunch

Procedure: Please be a little early and stage your gear at the park.  Drivers be prepared to roll and let the organizers know what pullout you wish to park at.  Volunteers for shuttle drivers are highly appreciated, and earn the "Guide" title in your profile.

Once the drivers return, we will provide a safety brief, then do a group photo before anyone goes on the river.

BTW, from Graves to "the Tubes" on Old State Rd is a quick 45 minutes, then to Webster Bridge another 75 minutes, then to Rogers Rd, another 45 minutes or so of slower water.

Still haven't paddled with this great group. I have a road trip, so ENJOY the Sturgeon!!

JC, Jill and I won't be getting to Haakwood until around 9pm on Friday. Can someone make sure we have a place to put up our tent?

    August 3, 2013

  • Brian F B.

Jim/Julie, Connie and I have reserved basically the whole north loop at Haakwood. I have paid for sites 4, 5 & 6. $39 apiece for the weekend. Please divide by tent occupants and pay me directly. Elwyn, your camper will be on the pad on site 5. Connie is on site 8 and willing to share. Jim/Julie are on site 2 on the river. The rest are open with the exception of site 3 which we did not reserve thinking these will be enough for everyone.

    1 · August 8, 2013

    • Brian F B.

      What sizes?

      August 8, 2013

    • Brian F B.

If there are none here you can go to Wolverine Campground. We have 8 sites saved with 8 campers. 1 on each site where there is room for only one.

      August 8, 2013

  • Brian F B.

Checked the Sturgeon today and its moving fast as usual and normal water levels. Haackwood was empty and Jim/Julie, Connie and myself will be there tomorrow to secure sites. I'm staying at Burt Lake though.

    August 7, 2013

  • Elwyn & Sandy D.

We can't come in until Sat. morning, just before the put-in. We assume all the sites at Haakwood will be taken by then, so would anyone be willing to reserve a site for a 20' camper for Sat. night, or willing to share a site?

    August 7, 2013

Last weekend at Haakwood, most of the sites had multiple units, some even had multiple RVs. The officials did not enquire about this, though they came through. They only checked for recreation passports.

Because of the uncertainty for getting a travel trailer site at Haakwood, Laurie & I will be camping at Sturgeon Valley Campground just S of Wolverine Fri. & Sat. nites. It will be great to see everybody again !!!

    August 4, 2013

      August 5, 2013

Hi Kathy, yes Beth is staying with me and we are sharing Brian's site. Thanks for checking with me. Looking forward to seeing you up north!

If Haakwood is full there are other camping options closeby. Sturgeon Vally Campground and Elkwood Campground. Burt Lake State Park in Indian River and another one called Wolverine Campground. For more info google them.

Those camping at Burt Lake State Park, what site(s) are you on? We're thinking of staying there, too. So we might as well try for a site near fellow kayakers.

    July 31, 2013

    • Elwyn & Sandy D.

Rats!! By the time we secured a tent, all the decent sites were taken! May have to rough it at Haakwood.

      August 4, 2013

    • Kathy S.

Hi Sandy, is Haakwood a campsite or motel?

      August 5, 2013

Jackie invited me earlier today. I'm excited to be going!

How many sites are available for pop up campers, and how much is a site?

    June 8, 2013

    • JC R.

Lots of site for popups if you get there on Friday Jon. Might be more difficult if you roll in on Saturday.

      June 9, 2013

    • Kristine V.

Jon, are you and Marianne going? Can I set my tent up on your site? Car pool? I work Friday.

      July 30, 2013

  • Kate B.

Have heard the Sturgeon is quite a challenge. Can beginner/intermediates do it without too much trouble? We did the Betsie but that was not too bad. What do you think?

    July 29, 2013

    • JC R.

You won't have any trouble on the Sturgeon Kate. I wouldn't recommend it for first year beginners because the water level has a huge influence and next week is looking wet.
