Interlochen in July Betsie/Boardman

This is a fantastic tour suitable for all paddling skill levels.

We will be camping at Interlochen State Campground

Saturday we will do the Betsie.

We'll do the Boardman on Sunday.

Camping Reservations can be made by going to this site:  http://www.midnrreservations.com/SearchPark.aspx?ParkID=38

Betsie River Paddle on Saturday,

We will be floating the Betsie River in beautiful Northern Michigan on Saturday July 20. We will be paddling from Homestead Dam to Lewis Bridge. The river is slow to moderate in this section and is 35 to 50 feet wide, passing through lowland forests.  This is approximately a 10 mile paddle and should be about a 4 hour float.

Those at camp - we will be leaving at 9:30AM for the put in.  Arrive at the put in at about 10:00AM to make this go smoothly.  I would like to start shuttling cars at 10:30, so we can have paddles in at 11:15. Please plan accordingly.

Skill Level:

Beginner/Intermediate. Average gradient is 4ft/mile.

Put In:

Homestead Dam. Parking is available at the end of Dam Road on the west side of the road.

Take Out:

Lewis Bridge will be the take-out. We will take-out just before we come to the bridge, on the right bank of the river. There will be 3 bridges we pass before coming upon Lewis Bridge. Parking is available on the west side of Lewis Bridge and the north side of River Road/CR-608.

Parking:

There is large off road parking areas at both ends of this float. Parking will not be an issue.

Maps & Directions:

I have included 2 links for maps/directions. As we have a very large group on this float, it would be very beneficial to have maps just in case someone gets separated from the group. Please print out copies of the maps & bring them with you to the float.

Boardman River Paddle on Sunday: Schumsky's Landing to Beitner Bridge Access if you want to skip the rapids, otherwise the takeout is at the end of the rapids.

Those at camp - we will be leaving at 9:30AM for the put in.  Arrive at the put in at about 10:00AM to make this go smoothly.  I would like to start shuttling cars at 10:30, so we can have paddles in at 11:15. Please plan accordingly.

The Boardman River is one of Michigan's most scenic and beautiful rivers. The water is crystal clear. We'll put in at Schumsky's Landing at  11:00 am after spotting some vehicles on our way to the put in. This is an approximately 7 mile paddle. Time: 3 or so hours. You don't want to miss this paddle!! Skill Level: - Beginner/Intermediate. Beitner Rapids below Beitner bridge is class II. Whoever wants to do that section can. Fast but not overwhelming. Anyone can do the Boardman with no problems but if you don't like about 15 minutes of fast and challenging water then Beitner bridge access is where you'll get out.  See the pictures from earlier trips!

If you are not camping at Interlochen State Campground and coming up for the day then follow the below directions to the put-in (or click on the MAP below, and change Interlochen to your city):

Take-Out is at Beitner Bridge or at the end of the rapids. How to get to Schumsky's Landing Sunday morning: 1. Drive north on US131 to exit 176 on M115 and go west towards Frankfort. 2. Just before to get to the town of Mesick turn right onto M37 and head north for 20.4 miles to Chums corner. 3. Chums corner is where US31 and M37 meet. 4. Turn right onto Beitner Rd.  Look for the West Michigan Kayaking Club signs 5. Follow Beitner Rd 1.6 miles until you reach the Keystone, Beitner, W River Rd intersection. 7. Turn right on W River Rd. and follow for about 4 miles to Schumsky's Landing which will be on the right.  Lots of parking, room for trailers, great for spotting.
