Lighthouse Crawl 2014-SWMCCC Photo Shoot

Are you loving this cold weather and snow? I am! Think of all the great ice formations on the piers along the Michigan lakeshore. . . perfect for a Saturday Lighthouse Crawl! If a winter photography shoot sounds good, please mark your calendars for January 18, 2014, for an all day SWMCCC (Southwestern Michigan Council of Camera Clubs) Lighthouse Crawl photography shoot.

Please note-these are approximate times.

9:00 AM -Meet at St. Joe pier at Tiscornia Park, St Joseph, MI 49085. Some photographers may be arriving for sunrise. There is a parking lot at Tiscornia Park.

10:30 AM -Head to South Haven's Lighthouse, Water Street, South Haven, MI 49090. We'll find a place to meet for lunch after shooting there.

1:30-2:00 PM -Head to Holland to photograph Big Red Lighthouse, Lakeside Rd. Holland, MI 49423. My preference is to walk in on the south side of the channel. If you prefer, please feel free to go to the Holland State Park to photograph Big Red from the opposite side. Or, hike in on the south side, where Big Red is located. It's approximately 1/2 to 3/4 mile hike each way.

3:30-4:00 PM -Head to Grand Haven Pier for sunset, 1001 S Harbor Dr, Grand Haven, MI 49417. Pier Parking is just past the state park entrance.

I was asked month's ago to give a talk at the River City Camera Club on "Practical Use of Compositional
Rules". I will use the photo's I took during crawl to illustrate the talk. If I look at all the posted photo's it will be humbling experience, but the idea is to use analytical thinking when you are shooting rather relying on "Having a good eye".

I was just at St Joseph lighthouse today and I found the best views to be from Tiscornia Park...If you go up the stairs...just a few stairs to the deck above the restrooms there, the view is phenomenal...and you can see the splash and ice a little better...Less wind there today too...I will meet you all at Silver Beach but I suggest we check that out...Not sure if you went up there Cari.....You get a great view of the sand too...Just a suggestions...we spent the night here...and I am so looking forward to tomorrow and meeting everyone

For those of you who use the WAZE navigation app I've created a temporary group called "2014 SWMCC Lighthouse Crawl" for tomorrow. If you enable the Group Popups setting you will get a message in the screen any time someone in the group reports a traffic issue. I thought this might be helpful as we will be driving so much and in so many vehicles.

    2 · January 17, 2014

  • Cari P.

Thanks, Gert, for the map! See you all tomorrow. The first stop will be difficult to "meet up" with the 2 locations to shoot at. After shooting at St. Joe, travel to the South Haven lighthouse. We will be meeting in South Haven at noon for lunch at Clementine's restaurant. See details below. At the restaurant we'll find out how many want to go to the south side of the channel in Holland to the "Big Red" lighthouse.

Question to the group...this is my 1st crawl and how much equipment are you all bringing? Also, any good recommendations for gloves that are good for warmth but also using a camera?

    1 · January 15, 2014

    • Robin T.

You are welcome...and likewise...it will be great to meet you...I am excited...They are predicted to get about 6 inches of snow all along the lakeshore tomorrow...The snow will be fresh and white....that is a good thing...

      January 15, 2014

    • Gert W.

I have 3 pairs of gloves of the kind that has open fingers and a fold away mitten. It works really well because you have finger touch control of the camera and can still cover up the skin when you really need to.

      January 16, 2014

  • Cari P.

All set. For those who would like to meet for lunch we will meet at Clementine's, 500 Phoenix St
South Haven, MI 49090. (269)[masked] Depending on the room availability, we will hopefully be in a large room, or in the main restaurant area. I'll try to be there at noon, but for those who know me and how much I like to shoot, it may be a challenge to get me away from the lighthouses. Ha. No worries, I'll get myself over to Clementine's. FYI: I was told South Haven's main roads are torn up. Will just have to follow detour signs to the harbor. And, take side streets to the restaurant. Clementine's is located on the corner of Phoenix and Center. See you there around noon!

    1 · January 15, 2014

  • Robin T.

Cari. First...thanks for coordinating this...With this many it is not easy...You said it is our choice between Tiscornia and Silver Beach...which location will you be going to if I may ask...I am looking to learn some things from others so I was hoping to be with the big group...Thanks again...

    1 · January 15, 2014

  • Cari P.

Bring a variety of lenses and warm everything. Hot hands are nice to have. Boots to keep you dry and warm.
Almost 40 people have signed up -a huge group-who will all be shooting at their own pace. Really difficult to coordinate precise times, but it would be nice, for those who would like to meet, could meet around noon for lunch at a designated place. Those who would like to stay in Grand Haven when it's over, can make arrangements with others to meet for dinner, etc. It's up to each photographer because again, we are all at our own pace. I'll check into finding a place in South Haven on the main street, one that could accommodate us for lunch. Hope the weather cooperates, too. Stay tuned. . .

    1 · January 15, 2014

    • Robin T.

I totally agree...It is logistically hard to find a place for 40 people...lunch would be great...not sure I would hang around fro dinner but some others might want to do that..

      January 15, 2014

  • Georgia M.

I thought we were all going to have lunch together and dinner for those who do not have to leave early.
It is the talking about the day with the people who have shared it with you that makes the day wonderful.

    January 15, 2014

Aside from wondering about which path to take, I woulld also like to get together with "the group" or at least a portion there of at lunch. This will be our first photograph group get together and we would like to meet some photographers.

    January 14, 2014

      January 14, 2014

Hi Robin, The photo above is on the Tiscornia park side-you can't get to the end of the pier very well but things are melting! The ice is already gone from the end of the pier-see my other photo in the link below (my flikr page), from the south side. Silver Beach park. They are not really comparable. When we went 2 years ago the Tiscornia park side was the best because you could see the entire lighthouse and with the early morning sun direction, it worked well. But this year, I'm thinking the Sliver Beach side may be the better location. Does that help?

My question, being of senior status (70) is how life threatening is one path over the other?

    January 14, 2014

  • Cari P.

cont. So, photographers can have 2 choices for the first stop-either the South Pier, which is a bit of a hike out over a snow-covered, icy pier or the pier side at Tiscornia park. We can shoot from the different piers but it will be hard to meet at the first stop (shoot more on your own and we'll look for groups of photographers) If you shoot from the south side, take exit 7 HWY 63 and stay on the HWY past the turn for Tiscornia park, over the bridge and make a right as you enter town. Look for the signs for Sliver Beach County Park and wind around to the end, near the channel to park there. Then, we can generally meet up at South Haven between 10:30 -11:00 AM. We'll shoot at the South Haven Pier before lunch and then have lunch there.

    1 · January 14, 2014

    • Dave J.

You won't need to climb. You can park close to the beach and, right now, there is easy access to the pier. Right now, it doesn't appear to slippery, either. This could be a great opportunity to get up close and personal with the lighthouse. From Silver Beach you will look across the channel at the lighthouse.

      1 · January 14, 2014

    • Rob M.

Are some photographers carpooling? I am interested if so.

      January 14, 2014

  • Cari P.

Oh, and as far as the climbing-I would say yes, only if the lighthouse at the end of the pier had more ice on it and the morning light is great. Then you would be at a good angle, but if we don't get high winds and colder weather in a couple of days there may not be ice. It's a quick drive to the other side of the piers to change locations if want to do so.

    1 · January 14, 2014

  • Cari P.

We do not have a set place to eat-photographers may dine wherever, but if you would like to eat with the group, please let me know. If you would like to email me separately, I'll send you my cell # to contact me. Please do not feel like you have to stay with the group though-this is casual and flexible, not structured. Just FUN. At lunch, we'll figure out how many would like to walk on the south side of Big Red in Holland, others may go to the state park to shoot from across the channel. Hope this helps!

    January 14, 2014

    • Robin T.

I am bringing a friend and would like to eat with the group, so let me know if we decide on a place ahead of time....Thank you for all your work...I am going down the night before and spending the night in St Joe...I am excited to meet everyone and hope to learn some things from the others...

      January 14, 2014

  • Cari P.

No official carpool-please make arrangements with those who are willing to drive and are from the same area or could meet at a designated location. I have to make several posts updates, so I hope it makes sense. FYI: I went to St. Joe last night because the sun was out -YAY!-here's a link of one photo I posted on Flikr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cari_weber/11941547355/ That photo was taken from the South Pier. Originally, we had our meeting spot at Tiscornia park, but head's up, the view was blocked by a hill of snow at the Tiscornia park side. You can hike & climb, but it was icy. I hiked out to the top of the hill and it was still difficult to shoot the end of the pier. The warmer weather has been melting the ice formations, but it is still nice. I'll try to upload a photo here to show the blocked view on the Tiscornia park side. cont.
