Wine Bar/Book Talk Get Together

I would like to try something new if enough people in our group are interested. Our typical monthly meetup consists of discussing that months chosen book with friendly, lively and spirited conversation. We are very familiar with the book by the end of the discussion, but we often don’t get to know each other very well despite the great conversations. I know there have been times I’ve left a meetup thinking “That was a great conversation. I wish I knew that person better”.

So, I’d like to propose getting together every other month for dinner. We could discuss books that you’ve already read, current events, movies, thought provoking topics. This might be easier for group members who are struggling to get a book read each month and come to the meeting but still like the thoughtful, fun and lively atmosphere that our meetup provides. Our regular book club meetups would still take place, I see this being an add on for anyone who is interested. We could schedule them more regularly if the turnout is consistently good, but for now the once every two months pacing is good to help gauge interest.

For this first dinner, I will choose either Coopershawk in Naperville or Wine Doc in Lombard (as a nod to those of us living west of Elmhurst ;>). If there are ongoing dinners we can choose other places. In fact maybe we could have our own mini Check Please! and our members could suggest unique and fun places to meet. RSVP if you are interested and I look forward to the event!

Sorry I am canceling tonight. Tired and just want to sit and start a new book. I noticed that it's 6:00pm and I just walked into my home. The book I would highly recommend is I Shall Be Near To Youby Erin Lindsay McCabe..it is her first book. A page turner for sure.. Based on fact. Inspired by more than 250 Documented accounts of the women who fought in the Civil War while disguised as men. Takes place 1864 and joined the Union volunteers. Check it out!

Lisa, I don't know if that will change things for us or not. My friend has early mornings so I don't want to contact her now but will let you know when I speak with her tomorrow.

Hello Everyone, sorry to do this but I had to change the location for dinner tomorrow night. The new location is DOC Wine Bar (next to Yorktown Mall) and they have great small plates, regular dinners and of course wine! Who knew Tues night was such a popular night for people to go out to eat? Coopershawk couldn't give us a reservation this time, but we can certainly try them in the future.

Also the reservation is still 7:00PM but the restaurant said they would give us a table as early as 6:30 so if anyone wants to come out a little earlier you are more than welcome. I will be there from 6:30 on. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions and again sorry for the last minute change. Looking forward to seeing you there!

I may have to decline. I have a late afternoon PT (first visit) appt. for my arm that somehow developed a pinched nerve. I've wanted to come so many times but last year I slipped on black ice 2 times. I live in Woodridge so Naperville is close.
I followed your comments to keep myself up to date with what this book club was doing with the comments you posted last year. This winter I decided to stay home if it snowed and be safe....and look what happened to our suburbs of Chicagoland this year with all that snow!

Hello everyone! Please update your RSVPs if needed so I will be able to give Coopershawk a headcount to reserve a table. The reservation will be under the name Lisa Sereno.

There is no formal agenda for tomorrow night other than introductions for newer members and kicking around ideas for future get togethers. Our group attracts, fun, well read and just generally awesome members if I do say so myself ;>. So for anyone wanting to get to know each other better, these get togethers outside of the monthly book club meetings are an opportunity to do that.

Let me know if you have any questions otherwise I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night!

I would like to attend. I had to bow out of the last book club meeting. But, I would like to bring a friend. She is not a member of the book club. Is that acceptable?

Hi Fitz, sure I think that would be ok for this.

I'm all over the Naperville location. I'm sure I'd make it more often if the get-togethers were west of elmhurst, half of the time. I'm in Winfield, so you can see why.

I will be on vacation for this one, but am definitely interested in a social event like this.

    Lisa,

What a great idea! You have done so much with the book club - thank you for assuming the reins from me. I have been having difficulty getting books read lately, but a night out socializing is exactly what I need!

I've gotten a couple of questions regarding the 3/25 dinner so here are the answers:

    1. There is no required reading for the dinner. It's a chance to get to know other group members better and discuss books we've read, or other interesting topics. I was inspired by watching last 10 or 15 minutes of some of our previous meetups where our members tend to do that anyway. Everyone really seems to connect when we do that.

I thought it would be fun to turn it into a dinner. We'll give it a try to see if people want to make this a regular thing.

    2. We will always have the monthly meetups/discuss that months book selection at Flight 112 in Elmhurst as long as the service is good. It is hard to beat how they welcome us.

Since most of our members live much further west of Elmhurst, I want to schedule the dinner meetups in Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, or Wheaton. It will help those members out by not always having to drive to Elmhurst. This makes it a little more fair for everyone.

Is there a book you are reading for this March get together I need to get from my library prior to coming? If so let me know.

    February 11, 2014

    • Lisa S

No not for this. Just talk about books you have already read that you liked

      February 11, 2014

BTW...I chose Coopershawk initially, but if we have a smaller group I could move it to Wine DOC. Both places have great small plates and wine.
