The WSSF focuses on the writings and theological insights of Emmanuel Swedenborg, an 18th century Christian mystic. Swedenborg wrote extensively about the esoteric meanings “hidden” within the biblical text, his personal communications with angels and spirits, and explanations of specific Christian doctrines such as the Trinity, the Hypostatic Union, and Divine Providence. Although Swedenborg himself is relatively obscure, his ideas have had wide-ranging impact and his influence on both traditional religious thought and newer spiritual movements often goes unnoticed..

Following his passing, the Church of the New Jerusalem was created in his name, although Swedenborg himself never attempted to found a church or lead a movement. Originally, he published the revelations he received anonymously as a layman. Following his example, the WSSF provides fellowship among laity and encourages private self-directed study. The WSSF recognizes that each member’s path and personal history is unique. Swedenborgian concepts can be used to supplement whatever your current spiritual development practices may be.

The Chicago area is currently served by two other Swedenborg organizations: the New Church in Glenview ( http://www.glenviewnewchurch.org) and the Swedenborg Library (http://www.swedenborglib.org/ ) in downtown Chicago.
