The Thursday West Valley Writer's Critique Group

This group is designed to provide writers with immediate feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of their writing. Writers should bring 6-8 hard copies of their work to share with the group. The printed copies permit participants to make direct written comments, while the on site presence permits verbal comments. Stories, poems, essays, novel chapters or segments, non-fiction, fiction, how to topics, memoirs, screenplays, stage plays, scripts, are all acceptable genre. Keep every genre alive. 4-8 pages/[masked] words works well for this kind of session.

Individuals are also welcome to observe if they're not ready to share their work for critique.

The first 30 minutes (6:15 PM) is a social, get to know your fellow authors period. Readings and critiques begin promptly at 6:45 PM. During the sign-in period Moderators will divide the writers into 2-4 break-out groups of 4-6 authors.

No food is available on the building site, however, a Sonic is directly across the street and several restaurants are located on Central Avenue. Snacks and beverages can be brought into the building. Parking is available on site.

The Gangplank provides Pizza for all Thursday night events.

Excellent time last night. Visiting prior to the meeting and listening to inspiring and insightful stories. Even learned more about poetry. Seeing individuals get published and sharing their stories provided good information for future writers. LOVE this group!

    Excellent, as always.
Bob Duckles lead the group of five ladies in a helpful, lively discussion of the works read. We had time at the end to chit-chat about writing in general, poetry and why we should never say we "don't understand it", or "we don't know how to read poetry."

Sorry guys, I have to bow out again. I'm going to have a full house (my parents AND mother-in-law are coming from TX) so I've been prepping for that instead of writing. I'll be hitting it hard late January!

They have nailed my hide so many times...always for the better... that I sometimes wonder if they will let me come back...but they haven't said no yet!
Love your stuff! Way to go!

Jan I agree you were very generous in admitting John and Jessie were right about your story. It takes a big person to #1 take the time to review their story #2 to realize critiques were correct and #3, the biggest of all, is admitting it, but to do so in this manner just elevates you in my eyes. You are a tremendous individual and show integrity. It's a pleasure getting to know you.

Jan, to share your experience is most generous, and a lovely tribute to John and to Jessie. Your story is also a reminder to us all of the value our group offers when we each participate in good spirit.

This is mostly written to John Daleiden and Jessie. Sometimes you're too close to the situation.."can't see the forest for the trees" and all that. Once I got home and put the chapter on the back burner to stew awhile, I read it again and what you were trying to get through my thick head finally sunk in. I simply took out the paragraph that "didn't fit" and with a little editing, it was much better..a lot less confusing. Thank you both for persisting that the paragraph just didn't work there. You were BOTH SO RIGHT! I love our Thursday meetings. I learn so much every week! Thanks for your patience with me when I'm being a numbskull!

Glad to hear you had a fun and valuable time at your first meeting. After December 19, we probably will not have a Thursday session again until January 9th. Hope to see you then! Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

I had a good time and learned a lot. The comments sparked something because I did a rewrite in less than an hour! Woo hoo! I have to drop my daughter off at the airport this Thursday so I won't be able to come.
