Geocaching Excursion #3: Hollywood (Including Jim Henson's Dino Train!)

For our third geocaching adventure, we'll be seeking caches in a muggle-ridden environment.

We should start with lunch. So let's meet at Mel's Diner at noon, and then head out from there.

For all of you Jim Henson fans, we'll be visiting the Dinosaur Train Tyrannosaurus Cache, officially placed and maintained by the Jim Henson company. This cache is special for several reasons: It is one of 128 owned and maintained by the Jim Henson company as part of the company's Dinosaur Train GeoTour, which itself is only one of six GeoTours officially recognized by Groundspeak, Inc. In fact, this GeoTour is also the only officially recognized one that spans across the entire country. AND! This cache is the only one on the tour that's in Los Angeles.

Other caches we might want to check out include: The Mothership, Crossroads Of The World, Fountain's Fountain, Station 10, and "Star Trek" at Hollywood American Legion. The last two times we went looking for about 4 or 5 and that was enough to tucker us all out. These, in particular, appear to be a little more difficult to find due to an excess of muggles and the like... but we'll see what we find!

For first time 'cachers: First, I'd recommend that anybody who wants to keep doing this get an account at Geocaching.com. If you do, add me (MarvelBoy). Read up on what Geocaching is just a bit, if this is completely novel to you! There will be more Geocaching events in the future.

If you have GPS devices, I recommend that you bring them! This includes phones (which is what I'll be using). There are also Geocaching apps on both the Apple and Android markets and those are helpful. Just be sure that, if you download them, they utilize info from Geocaching.com and that they can sync/link to your Geocaching.com profile.

I might not be able to stay for the entire time, I have family obligations to take care of, but I'm looking forward to at least finding one cache with you folks!

Mel's Drive-In! I considered BWW but I think Mel's is more suitable for our excursion. :)

Hi Henry! Usually they last 2 to 3 hours. Last time I felt really dehydrated, but it was warmer, so I think I'll be able to last longer this time, ahaha. Actually, I just went Geocaching this weekend and found 3 while missing another 2... and I'd say that took about 2 hours or so. Eventually I will have Geocaching events on more "hikeable" terrain, but for now I try to keep it pretty friendly to city folk and it's usually on flat concrete. The only real energy spent comes from walking the distance from one cache to another, and then looking in all the nooks and crannies to find it. I highly recommend you bring any GPS device, if you can. I just use my smartphone and it works really well. Hope that helps!

Sounds interesting, I've never done this before... How long do these excursions last and is there a lot of hiking rough terrains?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
