Well, no worries, there won’t be any tests, grades or homework. Not even lessons (unless someone wants to give one). If the August vacations and barbecues relegated your guitar to its case tucked under your bed, maybe it’s time to re-introduce yourself to your musical buddy.
On this date in rock history:
1961 - Dion releases “Runaround Sue”; 1965 - The Beatles release “Yesterday” (which initially was considered for release as Paul McCartney single, an idea rejected by the band which decided it would be a band release); 1969 - John Lennon announces he is leaving The Beatles; 1973 - on the verge of superstardom, Jim Croce dies in a plane crash.
What to bring:
Acoustic guitar, extra strings (in case of a break), capo, music stand if you have one, tuner and 12-15 copies of lyrics and chords sheets for 2 songs of your choice. Check website just before event for # RSVP's to determine # copies needed.
Meetup agenda (meeting location is usually open around 7:00 PM):
7:30-9:00 PM - Group Play:
We all play songs together. Each person distributes copies of the song he or she brought. In choosing songs to bring, try to keep songs to 5 chords or less and avoid unusual chords, like C#dim7. Sometimes the simplest songs can be the most fun as a group play. Songs with 12-16 bar sections for soloing are good too, to allow our acoustic “shredders” to show us how it’s done.
Note: there is no musical “theme” for this meetup, so choose whatever songs you think the group would enjoy.
9:00-9:30 (or so) PM - Show-off Time:
We set aside this time for anyone who wishes to play a song for the group. You don’t have to be a pro or a great singer - passion for the music counts for a lot. Strictly voluntary here, but, if inclined, this is your chance to perform for a small, supportive audience. If you dream about taking it further someday, this is a good place to start.
9:30-11:00-ish PM - Pack up, straighten up and socialize:
After we pack up our guitars and straighten up the room, those interested can adjourn to Harry’s Burritos restaurant down the block for some post-play social time. Good chance to get to know fellow guitarists.
