Let's Play an RPG! (Cross Post at Westchester Geeks)

This meetup is for anyone interested in playing in (or potentially running) a RPG Game...starting off as an introductory/one-off session but potentially becoming something more long term.

I've tentatively scheduled the session for Sunday, July 21, but I'd consider doing it on Saturday, July 27 as well if that is better for people.  We are using doodle to determine best play times.  Go tohttp://doodle.com/23nu8vkphfcbvhv9 and let us know what days/times are best for you!

The actual RPG we decide to go with will be up to the group, but we are considering all listed below. Please let me know which sparks your interest in the comments. The idea is we will have introductory sessions ready to go for all of them and we can vote and decide.

1) Marvel Heroics, some info can be found at http://boardgamegeek.com/rpg/16869/marvel-heroic-roleplaying

2) One-off Durance campaign, system info at http://www.bullypulpitgames.com/games/durance

3) Dungeon World campaign, bought this as well and would love to run it...it's getting rave reviews and essentially has all the good stuff from D&D without all the crappy stuff. As close to a perfect Fantasy RPG as I've ever seen...here's a review http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/15/15793.phtml

4) A GURPS campaign set either in a ShadowRun like Cyberpunk setting or a time travelling Infinite Worlds setting.  If you don't know anything about GURPS, here's a lite edition of the basic rules http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/~tdcreigh/Downloads/gurpslite4.pdf

Here's some more info on GURPS http://dungeonfantastic.blogspot.com/2012/06/why-i-like-gurps.html

Cheers.

Jonathan

Thanks everyone for coming. I had a great time. I'm going to post a tentative new meetup tonight for either August 10 or 11 and put up another Doodle for the best days/times and change as needed.

Well I definitely had a blast. Thanks to Jonathan for deciding to host us all at Modern Myths. We really had a great group and I hope to see you all again next time.

I really enjoyed meeting you guys, and think there is good potential for both one shot and long term campaigns. one or two more players maybe, a good campaign concept, and you're off and running. Also, it occurs to me, since you're also interested in looking at new systems, I am working on a mini-system you might find interesting. The website supports it with a web application which does a huge amount of the GMing grunt work. It's at the tail end of development now. I'm heavily play testing it. So with all the usual caveats you're welcome to take a look and try it out if you think it might suit your needs. At the very least you may find it interesting.

And in any event, I will definitely try to drop in on games and whatnot as time permits, and will RSVP as such going forward.

Thanks for the fun afternoon! See ya'll next time! :)

Marvel Heros and GURPS both are fun and interesting systems. Thanks!

Hi, Im interested in playing but can't do this weekend. Any chance I could get in another time?
    Thanks.

    • Jonathan

Absolutely. Up above there is a link to doodle which is just a free scheduling website that let's us determine the best times for interested players. I would go there and just let us know if any of the listed days/times are good for you.

I want to suggest a couple things and see what people think. First, if we are lucky enough to get enough players, like more than six or seven we should consider running two different games. We definitely have two people, me and Brendan, who are willing to DM.

Second, if we get only five or six players, we might consider actually running two games back to back. If we start at noon, it would mean about an hour for player creation and introductions, and two hours of actual play time for each game, with an hour break in between (i.e. noon to 7, 7 hours total) Brendan and me will have to come prepared with encounters/scenarios that can be realistically completed within two hours.

The benefit of doing this is someone like Mark who can't make it till 4 pm would get to play in the second session.

Finally, if we are really ambitious and get a lot of players we could actually try for 3 or even 4 games.

LOL I am up for any of the Systems ... Right now I am not versed in any of them but am quick on the uptake ... I doodled the dates I am available please let me know What dates are happening I would love to play!

    July 10, 2013

  • Mark

Ok I signed on for the Sunday game, but don't hold back on changing the date if you get more players at another date/time. I will not be able to get to the Sunday game until after 4pm any old way, so feel free to grab onto whatever day works best for the most people.

You might also want to expand your Doodle array of possible dates / times - if you have the ability to make other times yourself.

I'd like to try Dungeon World, but I don't think I can make the 21st.

    July 7, 2013

    • Jonathan

Just so I know, what are the best days for you?

      July 8, 2013

    • John V.

It varies with my wife's work schedule. Saturdays are probably better than Sundays.

      July 8, 2013

  • Jonathan

So I took Mark's advice to use Doodle. Follow this link and let people know good days/times for getting together: http://doodle.com/23nu8vkphfcbvhv9

    July 8, 2013

    • Mark

Yeah I think Doodle works pretty well. Just make sure you include enough date/time options to include everyone's possibilities. That usually gives you a clearer picture of availability.

      July 8, 2013

  • Mark

For everyone's interest, by the way, http://doodle.com/ is a handy (and free) schedule software thingie that lets people post their available days and times for events so they can figure out what date and time is best for the most people. Take a peek. It might be useful for this sort of thing. If you think it's worth it I can post a permanent link to the site in the message board.

    • Jonathan

I'll try it out, though for just four or five people if everyone just mentioned a few good weekend days, we might not need it. So Mark, are Sat or Sundays usually good for you? What are some good days?

      July 8, 2013

    • Mark

Yup, sure, that's true. ok. As for me, I can swing Sunday's after 4pm usually. Sometimes not. Other than that, I'm booked pretty solid.

      July 8, 2013

  • Mark

Ah the time change kinda threw me off a bit. I'm booked during the day on Sundays but can make the evenings. If I can make it over around 4:30 or 5:00, if for no other reason than to say hi and watch from the sides I will definitely do so.

    July 7, 2013

  • Jonathan

Also, could you guys also RSVP on Westchester Geeks (It's listed under "Suggested" events). If two more people RSVP it will be listed as an actual event, and I think Westchester Geeks has a lot more potential reach. If we get enough people, we could even maybe run two different RPGs.

    July 7, 2013

  • Jonathan

I'll prepare a few things as well, and see what people are up for at the time, but I'm totally cool with playing Marvel Heroics or whatever people want!

If it's on Sunday I'll be there! I'll come ready to lead a marvel Heroics session if we decide to try it.

Hey Jon, thanks a bunch for the shout out! I've been doing a lot of research into setting up a Marvel Heroics game and am confident we can have a lot of fun with it. Problem is, I'm in Boston this weekend and won't be able to attend.

I'm running a discussion in WARS to see if there's anybody else interested in possibly starting a Marvel Heroics session. If I can get 4-5 people on board, I'll definitely cross-post the event on WGeeks as well. Until then, stay away from my father!
