Maelstrom 2014 - The Unconventional Gaming Convention

In collaboration with Steve Segedy of Games on Demand, Double Exposure advances the concept of unstructured gaming, as we run an entire convention without a fixed schedule! Role Playing, Story Games, LARPs, Board & Card Games, Wargames - everything we'd normally run at DREAMATION and DEXCON - will be played when the Gamemasters and the players are ready - and without time limits. New Gamemasters will have an opportunity to be mentored by those who have more experience, and players can be exposed to new game systems at any time they choose. Groups of players can form at any time to play a game or learn a game."

Gamesmasters and Players of every shape, size and ilk, and any and all Game Systems are welcome! :)

Unexpected Bonus!

Fantastic News! I will be hosting a table at Maelstrom demonstrating Elthos RPG all weekend! :D That was very lucky and cool of the event organizer to let me do, and totally unexpected. I'm delighted. So you guys will definitely have a central point to rally around. No obligation of course for anyone to actually play Elthos (though I recommend you do try it). But we can set a time to meet at the Elthos table and that's a great way for us to do a little meet-n-greet while swirling around the Maelstrom! :)

This was a very interesting experiment on a much looser organization for gaming than in the usual Double Exposure conventions. The attendance on the other hand was low because the idea was hatched without much fanfare or lead time, however, despite that, it was a lot of fun and the people seemed to very much like the new format. I ran a demonstration table for my game system (Elthos), which was a great experience for me, and gave me very useful feedback. I had, overall, a great time and learned a lot from the experience.

Also note: Econo Lodge has rooms for $65 / night, has vacancies as of yesterday afternoon (3/30), and is about 10 minutes from the convention. I've booked a room there for myself for Friday and Saturday nights. Also, since gas and tolls take a toll, if anyone cares to carpool feel free to pipe up. The more the merrier.

Conversely it takes about 1 hour to drive there from White Plains so there is always the option to go, drive home, and go the next day, etc. My schedule that weekend is somewhat choppy, but I am pretty much thinking of handling it that way. Thus, I suggest that whatever way we get there and when, we post here and work to meet on an ad hoc basis. Probably best times to meet will be random, so lets play that by ear. If you will be GMing, please post the Date/Time/Location here as well. And in either case - this looks like it's going to be an awesome event, so have a great time!

It is probable that some people (myself included, possibly) may not be able to make it for every day of the event. Please note (from the website): "Rooms at the Morristown Hyatt are $107.00/night (flat rate). However, due to the overwhelming and unexpected response to this new convention, we have officially run out of rooms! If you would like a room and don't have one yet, please send us eMail and we'll put you on the waiting list. The hotel is trying to free up more rooms between now and April 4th." As I did not expect this to happen I waited too long and don't have a room. I wonder if anyone else is in the same boat? There is a possibility of getting a room at a nearby motel (not nearly as great but might work). Or splitting the cost and sharing a room if anyone who has one is willing to do that. Thoughts/Suggestions?

Will be running d&d 4e or playing board games depending on player needs.

Great. When we get a little closer to the event I will post the times and places for us to meet and greet. Probably each afternoon around dinner time might be good. When I know more specifics I'll post here. :)
