Westchester Geeks Summer Hike #1

Fellow Geeks! Let's get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful sights that Westchester has to offer!

Background: I suddenly felt a drive to start hiking again (used to a lot as a Boy Scout) and felt that, heck, the more, the merrier!

I am suggesting that our first hike be a short one. Namely, Anthony's Nose (in Peekskill). The hike is short (relatively), but a little steep at the beginning.

The whole round trip is 2.6 miles (~2.5 hours of hiking) - with an end result of a view of the Bear Mountain Bridge and Hudson River.

It looks like you guys had a great time. Please do this again and hopefully I won't be injured.

Have a great hike people! So glad you have such nice weather for it, even if I'm not up to joining you.

  • Michael

We are going to be there soon, we got turned around in Peekskill.

With our hike tomorrow morning at 10, here's a few prep tips!

    1) The weather, while definitely looking good tomorrow, can change quickly during the summer. Be sure and dress comfortably. On that thread, try to stay away from cotton - if you get wet/sweaty, it will not dry well.

    2) BRING WATER - I cannot stress this enough. Being dehydrated sucks and it will make for a miserable experience. Be sure and bring water with you - I will try and have a pack of water in my car too.

    3) Do NOT wear sandals. Wear hiking shoes/boots or sneakers if you have them (I wear sneakers). Make sure that they have a good grip though (don't wear Vans or something with no tread to them).

    4) Bring a snack with you! I'll bring some clementines but feel free to bring granola, GORP, etc.

Michael Vernon has graciously offered to help with sweeping in this hike (as Seamas cannot make it).

Looking forward to see everyone tomorrow!

Wish I could make it. I hear it's supposed to be an awesome trail. Remember to take pix!

just as a heads up, the location when you click on the map is wrong. it sends you to a motor company.

    July 13

    • Sean R.

Erika, the issue is that there technically is no "location" - we'll be meeting on 9D near the trail head (see the comment I posted).

I'm going to cancel too. I sprained my ankle and I'm afraid I will make It worse or reinjure and since I leave for Greece the following week. Please do again.

Sorry - the notifications were disabled for me.

This IS still happening. We will be meeting on the shoulder of Route 9D (which is the only place to park for this) at 10 AM still.

Here is the link to the blog from the guy who hikes all the trails on the Hudson.

    Is this still happening?

  • Rob

Where are we going to meet up?

    July 14

  • Randi

I am being summoned to MD for a week for work and I'll be leaving that morning. Hope to see y'all at the next one :-)

  • Seamas

Since there is a limited number of spots, please make sure you're able to attend. Holding a spot and canceling at the last minute isn't fair to people who want to come. Thank you

I'm curious- who was the Boy Scout, Sean or Seamas?

    July 3

    • Chris

I could see both of you as boy scouts.

      July 3

    • Chris

Seriously, I was a boy scout too. I was an adult volunteer for a Boy Scout Explorer Post that specialized in Fire/EMS in upstate NY.

I'd love to go, but am very novice. Will this be slow enough for an out of shape novice? I don't want to slow anyone down.

    July 3

    • Randi

hi Melissa, i'm a bit of a novice, too :o).

Oh good. We'll stick together. :)

OK peeps - question (for those savvy with Meetup).

As this would be our first hike, I wanna keep it somewhat small. Does anyone know how to create a cap on the RSVP list?

    July 3

  • Michael

I'd be up for it! I've always wanted to do some hiking up there.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
