Join us for a local Westchester moderate late winter hike at the beautiful Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. We'll plan to hike for about about three hours, covering the southeast portion of the area, which has some very beautiful rock outcroppings.
Difficulty: Moderate. One long sustained hill climb.
Distance: Approximately six miles.
Time: About three to four hours.
Trail map: http://www.trailsidemuseum.org/PDF%20Files/WardPoundRidgeMap11x17.-08.pdf
Directions: From I-684, turn east and follow Route 35 east for 3.7 miles, then turn right onto Route 121 south. After crossing a bridge, immediately turn left into Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. Continue for 0.7 mile to the tollbooth (there is a parking fee on weekends, daily in summer, commencing at 9am, hence the early start time). Let's plan to meet at the parking area of the Trailside Nature Museum, which is about a mile past the tollbooth.

Trivia: The low stone walls that crisscross the forest floor remind the visitor that more than thirty farms once existed within the park's boundaries. These farms were gradually purchased by Westchester County and the park was dedicated in 1938 as Pound Ridge Reservation. Later it was renamed to honor William Ward, former County Parks Commissioner, who was instrumental in creating the county's park system. The "Pound" in Pound Ridge refers to the enclosure or pound used by Native Americans to capture their prey. It is the largest park in Westchester County.
