Ward Pound Ridge

  • Mar 2, 2013 · 8:45 AM

Join us for a local Westchester moderate late winter hike at the beautiful Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. We'll plan to hike for about about three hours, covering the southeast portion of the area, which has some very beautiful rock outcroppings.

Difficulty: Moderate. One long sustained hill climb.

Distance: Approximately six miles.

Time: About three to four hours.

Trail map: http://www.trailsidemuseum.org/PDF%20Files/WardPoundRidgeMap11x17.-08.pdf

Directions: From I-684, turn east and follow Route 35 east for 3.7 miles, then turn right onto Route 121 south. After crossing a bridge, immediately turn left into Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. Continue for 0.7 mile to the tollbooth (there is a parking fee on weekends, daily in summer, commencing at 9am, hence the early start time). Let's plan to meet at the parking area of the Trailside Nature Museum, which is about a mile past the tollbooth.

Google Map directions link: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.258006,-73.588639&hl=en&sll=41.266408,-73.641847&sspn=0.22193,0.528374&z=17

Trivia: The low stone walls that crisscross the forest floor remind the visitor that more than thirty farms once existed within the park's boundaries. These farms were gradually purchased by Westchester County and the park was dedicated in 1938 as Pound Ridge Reservation. Later it was renamed to honor William Ward, former County Parks Commissioner, who was instrumental in creating the county's park system. The "Pound" in Pound Ridge refers to the enclosure or pound used by Native Americans to capture their prey. It is the largest park in Westchester County.

Weather: Rain cancels.

Equipment: Sturdy hiking shoes. Water -- at least two liters. Hiking poles recommended. Headlamp or flashlight. Trail map. Fully charged cell phone.

Dog policy: Dogs are welcome on this hike, but must be kept on leash and under control at all times.

Guests: No guests for this hike. All hikers must be members of WHMG.

Important Note: Be certain to check this webpage and your email prior to the hike for any last-minute changes or cancellations.

Great hike ! I would have liked an opportunity to climb up to one of the clearnings and look out to the horizon. Perhaps some points of interest along the way. Other than that, awesome day!

Great to be back hiking in Pound Ridge. Fond memories of lean-to camping with the Scouts 30 years ago in December freezing our butts off:-). Sad to see the devastation of all the pine trees from Super Storm Sandy. Thanks to all of you who shared the trail with me today and to Peter for leading another invigorating trek.

Oh, no! I just broke a tooth and have to go to the dentist tomorrow morning instead of this wonderful hike. I was planning to pick up Amandeep Sharma at the Katonah Train Station tomorrow morning on my way to Ward Pound Ridge: Is ANYONE ELSE able to pick up Amandeep on their way up from anywhere SOUTH of Katonah? Or is anyone coming East on Route 35? Katonah is Exit 6 off Interstate 684, just barely South of Route 35. Ah, there's nothing like a date with the drill instead of enjoying the refreshing outdoors....

I am new to the group and I am really excited about the hike coming Saturday...I was wondering if it is possible to get a pickup from Southeast station??

I can pick you up at Golden's Bridge, but if you can come one more stop south, to Katonah, it's right on my way to Ward Pound Ridge. (I'm coming from Bedford Hills.) Can you be at the station by 8 or 8:10 the latest? • I have room for 2 more if anyone else needs a ride from nearby.
