5 mile loop hike up and around Butter Hill & Storm King Mountain

Level of Difficulty: intermediate/advanced hikers who can keep a moderate pace.

The initial accent up Butter Hill will be a steep rock scramble.  The Bluebird and Stillman trails will take us on a loop down, around and up Storm King. Along this section there are some steep drop-offs, and possibly slippery sections. We will stop at various viewpoints along the way with wonderful views of the Hudson river and surrounding hills.

Terrain: Moderate with some steep hill climbs, slippery/rocky sections and drop-offs.

What to bring: Bring plenty of water, snacks, and wear hiking boots

Meeting point: As there are several pull outs and this location can only be reached from the south, please pay close attention to the directions: Take Route 9W North for about 8.5 miles from the Bear Mountain bridge traffic circle, to the large parking area on the right. The parking is located where the road turns to the left, after the top of the hill, there should be a blue parking area sign. There is a small gravel lot prior to this parking area this is NOT our meeting point.

NOTE: There is no access to this parking lot from the north (i.e. driving south on 9W). You will need to drive over the top of the hill on 9W (you will see your final destination a large parking lot on the left, just before you crest the hill) and continue driving south, turning around where you can. The best turn around point is probably Route 218. GPS location: N[masked], W74 00.067.

PS Thanks Heike! Hope you can make it!

I had a great time- the weather was beautiful as were the views. It was "just-right" in terms of a challenge for me as this was my first official hike (I have only been walking before this hike!) I now know what a rock scramble is : ) Great fun! Great people! Look forward to the next hike!

I am new in this, so I do not know if being in the writhing list means that I can go to hike with you guys or I have to wait until someone tell me that I can.

Cristina, the waiting list means that there are more hikers signed up than there are spots available. Generally there are a sufficient number of cancellations such that those on the waiting list get moved to the going list. You will receive an email notification if a spot opens up for you.

Would love to attend. I'm an experienced hiker and as an Ornithologist I have the added benefit of identifying birds by sight and call for the group.
