Harriman: Almost Perpendicular / Elbow Brush / Claudius Smith Den

  • February 1, 2014 · 9:30 AM

Join us for a moderate mid-winter loop hike up through the far western section of Harriman State Park.  We'll climb Almost Perpendicular, a steep volcanic torne, then hike north through Elbow Brush to the Claudius Smith Den area, a famous hideout for a notorious Revolutionary War renegade. Some steep climbs and descents, and beautiful views along very rocky terrain.

Estimated Time: 5 -7 hours

Trail Map: NY/NJ TC #118

Great hike, great people. Thank you!
Oh and Tom: The German groundhog day is on June 27th and is called "Siebenschläfer" (fat dormouse, according to German weather folklore, weather on this day will last for seven weeks)

Lovely, lovely, lovely day in a less known (to me) southern portion of beautiful Harriman. Many pleasant surprises like the gigantic icicles, the challenging rock scrambles and the expansive views. You did well, Peter!!

Peter I'd say if we can keep it to the pace we did it in we can go farther North than what we did yesterday afternoon with Jennie & Dan.

there is also the Tuxedo Junction Inn, in Tuxedo, a short walk from the parking lot. Not sure of the beer selection there though

Had a very unpleasant experience at Mason Jar a couple years ago with a large group and management and haven't been back since. Good beer is key for Dave and I :-) Only problem with Rhodes and a big group is the handwritten bill at the end. But can work with it.
