Minnewaska: Gertrude's Nose Loop/Millbrook Mountain

Join us for a brisk moderate mid-spring loop hike at Minnewaska State Park Preserve.

Minnewaska lies in the Shawangunk Mountains. This strikingly unique landscape was created by an abrupt upward folding of the earth's crust.  What makes the Ulster County Shawangunks unique is the white quartzite conglomerate that caps this part of the ridge and protects the soft, underlying shales from erosion. This cap-rock forms the ridge-top escarpment, the enormous vertical cliffs for which the northern Shawangunks are famous.  Our hike will wind through vast dwarf pitch pine barrens, huckleberries, and mountain laurel bringing us to a beautiful view atop Millbrook Mountain.  We’ll then hike along the escarpment to a viewpoint at Gertrude’s Nose named after Gertrude Bruyn, a 17th century settler of Dutch descent.  From there, we’ll make our way back enjoying overlooks of the Palmaghatt Ravine.

Location: Meet at the Lake Minnewaska upper parking lot.

Please note, there are nicely maintained bathrooms at the Park Office which is 1.1 miles east of the Minnewaska entrance on the opposite side of the road.

Difficulty: Moderate - Brisk. Because the group size is restricted for this area, I will be selecting participants from the waiting list, and priority will be given to those who have hiked frequently with the group (and me) previously.

Distance:  7.0 - 8.0 Miles

Estimated Time: 4-5 Hours

Hello Everyone, We're going to postpone this outing. The national weather service says "Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 75. Southwest wind 7 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%." We really didn't want to postpone, but it will be a nicer hike on a fair weather day.
