Westchester Hike: Westmoreland Sanctuary

Fun, moderate local Westchester hike. We will hike some of the northern perimeter of Westmoreland Sanctuary, about 1.5 hours total. Plan to meet up at the Westmoreland parking lot by 6:00pm and we will commence hiking promptly at 6:15pm. Please plan to bring something delicious to share, and we'll have a quick picnic at the hike's conclusion.

About Westmoreland: Many rolling hills with a wide selection of well-maintained trails. Many interesting rock outcroppings. Multitude of deer, squirrels, chipmunks and various raptor species. An occasional fox sighting as well.

Difficulty: Beginner hiker level: moderate-to-strenuous / intermediate hiker level: easy-to-moderate

Distance: Approximately 3-4 miles.

Weather: Rain cancels.

Equipment: Sturdy hiking shoes. Plenty of water. Hiking poles if needed. Insect repellent. Headlamp.

Guests: No guests. Every participant must be a member of WHMC. Hey, it's free to join!

Dogs: Dogs are not allowed in Westmoreland Sanctuary per their policy.

Best navigation bet: From the north: Take 684 to Rte 172 west. Go one-half mile, make a left turn onto Chestnut Ridge Road and follow road to the Lake Bridge Road junction. Just past the junction, turn left into parking lot. From the south: Take 684 to Rte 22 north. Make a left turn onto Chestnut Ridge Road and follow road to just before the Lake Bridge Road junction. Turn right into parking lot. If parking lot is full, go across the road and park in the Arthur Butler Sanctuary parking lot.

Mike, I was hoping to see you on the hike, but my friend and I arrived 5 mins late (very hard for me to get to Mt Kisco that early on a work night) and everyone was gone (wow, such athletes)! We did a long hike ourselves there anyway. Never saw anyone, and all cars were gone from the parking lot except ours when we got back, too funny! So, the pictures without people is pretty much exactly what we saw ;-). Leola

Leola - yea, I wondered what happened to you. What time did you get back from your hike? I left for home around 8:30 and a few others were still hanging around. You must've ended your hike in the dark.

I'm sorry I didn't make it after saying I would attend. Forgot about Ping Pong at the Westchester Table Tennis Center (Pleasantville), which runs it's league night on Thursdays. Sorry. Hope to see you all in the future. Kongzi (ART)

This was an excellent hike, with nice company, on a perfect night with just enough difficulty for me to feel like I was challenged a bit, but could manage it too. I look forward to more!

David, I think Craig just means that he can't go today. I think the hike is still on (hopefully it is -- we're looking forward to doing it today after work)! Leola

Leola. I didn't get a chance to make anything. Is there anything I can pick up at the store for the group?

Bag of organic chips, apples or other healthy snack or bottle of wine with dixie cups you can grab quick would be fine. Like I'm some authority or something ;-). Looking forward to it!

OK. I didn't get a chance to make anything but I could stop at the deli or grocery storeto pick up something that the group needs. Let me know as I leave work at 4pm, and won't be on email thereafter.

Craig - look at the trouble you caused! Next time, be more explicit, will ya? LOL
