Let's discuss "Winter's Tale" by Mark Helprin

  • April 6, 2013 · 11:00 AM

For this months meetup we will read and discuss "Winter's Tale" by Mark Helprin.

We will be meeting at Wendy Patten's home in White Plains. If you RSVP yes to the meet up, message either Wendy or me for the address/directions. She has plenty of parking and seating. If anyone wants to carpool from the Mamaroneck/Harrison area, let me know.

Also, Wendy is being generous enough to offer tea, coffee, eggs, and hamburgers! I am planning on bringing a dessert and perhaps a side dish for lunch. If anyone would like to bring a dish to pass, just let me know what you are bringing!

Enjoy the read, and I look forward to April 6th!

Where will you be coming from. I'll be driving from New Rochelle. If you're on the way, I could give you a ride.

    Hey all...
Really excited to have you all over on Saturday. My boyfriend will be making stuffed burgers for anyone who wants one. They can be stuffed with bacon, mushrooms, grilled onions and cheese - swiss, colby, pepperjack and/or cheddar. If you could let me know ahead of time if you'd like a stuffed burger and what you want in it, it will be much easier for him.

We'll also have coffee, tea and scrambled eggs.

wow Wendy, how generous of you! Do you need anything? I am happy to pick up buns for the burgers, or some sweetener and cream for coffee and tea?

OK, I don't want to jump the gun on the conversation, but I have a question about Winter's Tale:

I'm 100 pages into the book and I like it a lot, but I can't figure out when it is supposed to take place.

I'm thinking of the scene where the Dead Rabbits approach Peter Lake in Grand Central. The Dead Rabbits were gang in the 5 Points area in the mid-1800s, and the feel of the book seems to suggest that era. BUT, Grand Central Terminal did not open until 1913. (It's celebrating its centennial this year.)

I was wondering of this was an earlier version of Grand Central, but the descriptions of the place, with constellations in a vaulted, green sky, sound like the current one.

So. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

    Thanks,
    Ken
P.S. I've read that the Dead Rabbits never really did exist, but that's besides the point.

Its sounds like the current GCT. The timeperiod is hard to pinpoint.

Check this out. They're making the movie out of the book now, due out later this year. What a strange coincidence. The book is 30 years old. We just start reading it, and the movie is coming out.

Cool. (Maybe we could do a class trip when it's in theaters.)

That sounds fun, I haven't started the book but if I like it, I'll probably want to check out the movie.
