Let's discuss "The Demolished Man" by Alfred Bester

This month we'll be reading "The Demolished Man" by Alfred Bester.  This book was the first Hugo Award winner in 1953 and is science fiction and an inverted detective story.  Not available in the Westchester Library System so maybe we can correct that after we read it and donate it to our local libraries for their shelves.

We'd like to welcome members to join us.  Even though it is held at a house, there is plenty of parking for everyone and we will provide you with a gourmet stuffed burger, snacks and drinks - both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

Hope to see everyone Saturday, April 5.  Please note the time change - to 11:30a - to give you more time to sleep late on Saturday.

If you would like to take a train or need a ride, please let me know and we can arrange.

Hi all, so, there have been questions about not being able to find the book, and I got a solution for you, as long as you are willing to read it on a computer screen :) The three original installments of the book published in the Galaxy Magazine are available online (I found the links in Wikipedia, you can look them up in the External Links). The book took me two days to read, so I hope you still have time. Enjoy!

It is nice to see so many new people coming. Looking forward to meeting everyone. Please look at Google or Bing maps street view. The house with the pickup truck in the driveway is ours. We will have someone outside to guide you for parking but please be prepared for the house to be on your right on Manor Dr before you get to Woodhampton Dr.

I'm new to this, so my question echoes Cynthia's. Also, is there a fee involved ? How long does the meeting last ? Thanks !

    April 1, 2014

    • Wendy P.

No fee. Meeting lasts at least am hour but there's no specific end time. If you need to leave by a specific time, tell us when you're parking so we can ensure you can get out easily.

If you would like to bring something, macaroni or potato salad would be nice.

I read the book on my iPad. Reminded me of Minority Report a little. The idea that psychics or mind readers can prevent crimes before they happen.

"The Demolished Man" is out of print, but there are paperbacks and hardcovers on the Amazon.com used book marketplace at a wide range of prices. Since I live in Rockland County, I was able put the book on hold from one of the libraries here. If anyone else from the group is from Rockland, there are two copies left in the system.

Thank you. I kept waiting to buy the book because I wanted to donate it to my local library but I finally decided to get it on the kindle since it's out of print.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
