Our group description indicates that we read the best of sci-fi from "Asimov to Zelazny," so we should probably back that up by actually reading some Asimov! In fact, we're way behind on our "Golden Age" reading list, but this volume, part of Isaac Asimov's legendary Robot series, is as good a place as any to start.
A smart blend of imaginative sci-fi and the tropes of detective fiction, The Caves of Steel was Asimov's attempt to show the mallability of the sci-fi genre; that books could incorporate all kinds of literary styles and still be considered "sci-fi." Here's a quick teaser:
"A millennium into the future, two advancements have altered the course of human history: the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain. Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions. But when a prominent Spacer is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Baley is ordered to the Outer Worlds to help track down the killer. The relationship between Life and his Spacer superiors, who distrust all Earthmen, is strained from the start. Then he learns they have assigned him a partner: R. Daneel Olivaw. Worst of all is that the "R" stands for robot -- and his positronic partner was made in the image and likeness of the murder victim!"
The meeting is set for Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at Aurelio's Pizza in La Grange.
