Cancelling Feb. 18 meeting

Since only one person RSVP'd for the Feb. 18th meeting, I've been forced to cancel this month. I'm not certain what's happening with the meetup: do I need to reschedule the group to a weekend? should we meet more frequently? is there simply no interest in this book club? is it just too far away to gather together the people that might want to attend? I'm not sure.

I'm going to give this meetup in its current incarnation one more try. I'm rescheduling the next meeting for Fri., March 12 to read Gibson's Neuromancer.

As always, I'm welcome to listen to any suggestions.

These are the voyages of the Western Suburban Science-Fiction Book Club...

Our continuing mission: to seek out the most compelling, discussion-provoking science-fiction (and occasionally, fantasy) novels and gather together to chat about them over dinner. It's a pretty good mission.

Reading sci-fi suggests certain nerdish... leanings, but don't be afraid: our group is all-inclusive. Yes, I'm sure a few of us qualify as geeks, but we're all socially well-adjusted and reasonably freshly showered too. Our members are in their 20s and their 60s, both new to the genre and very well read. A willingness to read and discuss with an open mind is all that's required.

Every month, we read novel and meet at a restaurant to mull it over. From cyberpunk, to steampunk, to biopunk, and all the punks in-between, we want to read books from all across the genre. We also want your input! Members select each month's book from a poll and are welcomed to make suggestions and offer feedback.

We meet on the third Thursday of each month in the near western suburbs of Chicago (and once in a while in the city proper). Meeting notices are posted at least two months in advance, giving you plenty of time to find and finish the books.

As we continue to grow, the group has recently implemented the following bylaws:

Meeting attendance is capped at 20. This is the largest group possible that still allows for semi-coherent discussion and easy accommodation at most restaurants.
Members pay a nominal, non-refundable fee ($2.00) when they RSVP for a meeting. This fee covers organizational/Meetup costs. Payments are made using Amazon Payments, allowing you to pay using your existing Amazon.com account (contact the organizer with questions/concerns about this policy).
As many meetings have a waiting list, there is now a "three strikes" rule for no-shows and those who cancel less than 12 hours before the meeting begins without contacting the organizer (hopefully with a good excuse).
