LDT Update - Placerville Sierra Foothills Weekend 5/4/13 - 5/5/13
This weekend is the last of our "getaway" weekends, this time we travel to the Sierra Foothills to ride the foothills around Placerville. Riders are welcome to join us for one of the days, but due to the distance from home most will stay overnight for one or two nights. The routes are hilly but the roads are lovely and most have little traffic. The weather for this weekend is again looking great, with temperatures around 80 degrees. (Note that our ride starts at 2000' elevation, significantly above the heat of Sacramento where mid-90's are expected.)
Please note in the ride description that Saturday's ride starts in Somerset, about 20-30 minutes south of Placerville. While some people will be spending Friday night in Placerville, others will drive up on Saturday morning. If driving directly to the start from the Bay Area it is shorter to approach from the south rather than driving through Placerville (see ride description/directions). Make sure you plan enough driving time - the rides meet at 9:15 and depart promptly at 9:30.
At this point rooms may be scarce at our recommended hotel, but there are several other options in the area, including a Best Western. We are planning a wine and cheese get together at the National 9 Inn after Saturday's ride. Our group dinner will be at a restaurant in Placerville on Saturday night, and there is a great place where many of us will gather for breakfast on Sunday.
We would really appreciate it if riders could let us know if you are planning to join us for dinner on Saturday. Please send me an email at: [masked].
Guy Shuman and Mindy Steiner will be coordinating the weekend and leading the C- ride group. Other leaders will be determined at the start - let me know if you can lead or co-lead one of the groups.
Our safety emphasis this week is "Staying Hydrated and Not Bonking". As the weather gets warmer and the rides longer and/or hillier, riders must take precautions to assure they don't "bonk" on the road. Running out of food or water is not only dangerous, its also unfair to your co-riders who often give up their water or food supplies to others who aren't prepared. Everyone has different nuitrition needs when they are riding. The trick is to know your own requirements and make sure you carry a little more than the bare minimum.
Looking forward to seeing you this weekend. Let me know if you have any questions.
