B/2.5!/45 Coastal Hills

This ride includes but is not limited to Stage Road, Highway 1, Gazos Creek Road, Pescadero Creek Road, and parts of Highway 84. It offers spectacular views of the majestic Pacific Ocean and verdant Redwood forests. Although the route never stops rolling, it rolls downhill for the last ten miles. It is a challenging ride for many B riders with 2800 feet of climbing, but we do not leave riders behind. Lunch will be in Pescadero at about the thirty mile mark (Bring or buy). Riders should meet Howard Shafer ([masked]) at the San Gregorio General Store at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am departure. To get to the start, take Highway 84, aka La Honda Road, from I-280. Go west over the mountain and almost to the coast. The store is at the intersection of Stage Road and Highway 84. Park far enough from the store that your car won’t encroach on customers’ parking area. There have been reports that the owners don’t like cyclists. Don’t make it worse. Bad weather cancels ride.

What a great ride. Thank you so much for listing and organizing it Howard. What a shame you could not be there

So what are we all thinking about the heat? Do we think we will have coastal breezes or do we think it will be hot while we are climbing? I got over heated a few weeks ago and it was no fun at all.

How are you both feeling Howard?

I'm okay. When I wake up my ears are clogged and I feel like I'm underwater. Also, my throat has been sore off and on since early May. I keep having relapses and getting really sick for two or three days, and I hoped to avoid another relapse by not doing the ride today. I did go on a short ride with my wife, and I seem okay.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to get a ride out there? I can easily get to anywhere between San Jose and Palo Alto, and probably won't need a ride back (depends on plans for the rest of the day). I'd appreciate it.

Also, I have not done a ride with any significant climbs yet, is there anything special that I should bring, or do to prepare? I think I'll try to work-out earlier in the week, and probably not do much aside from my normal commute ride Thurs/Fri. Thoughts/advice?

    Thanks!

Howard's rides are always very well run and no one gets dropped, but these are pretty significant hills to start out on if you have not done much climbing before.

Haskins Hill is a tough climb. The two hills going on Stage to Pescadero are challenging too.
