Full Moon

Cross Country Ski

(&/or snowshoe)

Skyway ski trails

on Grand Mesa

Sunset is 5:15 PM and the moon rises at 5:11 PM

Weather forecast looks great!

WHEN/WHERE:

Meet at 5:15 at Palisade Park n Ride parking lot at Palisade exit from I-70; just east of Elberta Ave. We can carpool &/or caravan from there. This is the same I-70 exit as Wine Country Inn.

Or meet at Skyway parking lot at 7 PM. Look for Carol's dark blue Jeep Grand Cherokee.

BRING:

  • X-C skis &/or snowshoes; poles
  • Wax, if you're using waxable skis; scraper, cork.
  • Dress in layers so you can adjust to temperatures as you execise then rest
  • Headlamp
  • Water & snacks
  • Thermos of hot (adult?) beverage in the car
  • Dry clothes and shoes in the car

DOGS:

Since we will be at Skyway trails this time, leave FIDO home. No dogs allowed on this trail.

COST:

No charge for trail use but donations or membership in Grand Mesa Nordic Council is suggested.

We had to buy a GMNC membership to reserve the warming hut so a small contribution toward that $45 membership cost would be appreciated.

This trip was so much fun. the snow was beautiful, The trails hard to find but perfect, once found. Magical, celestial, ethereal and more. Hut was perfect for such a trip as this. Company was GREAT! Thanks to everyone who attended and played together on the mountain.

Skiing was charming - 1st time there for me. I do not recall trail names but Carol chose a trail that was well protected by huge trees from much of the 10-15 mph wind and had just enough mini-hills to be a nice choice for an almost zero visibility ski. Really surprisd that there must have been at least 4-5 other vehicles of skiers up there. Saw them on the trail in the distance but none came in the hut. Speaking of the hut - many many thanks to GMNC for that wonderful facility. It made getting out to ski on a soaking wet night - coldest temp was 26 degrees - still a joy since we knew we had a place to warm. socialize, dry out (some) and eat.

Not the rain in Palisade or Mesa, driving snow at Skyway or the dark of a moon-hidden night could stop . . .. a great time being had. Thanks to Carol for the idea, then to Dave and Elizabeth for arriving first and getting the fire going. Ed & Ron saved the evening with their knowledge of how to get the stove to 'draw' so we could warm the place up. Lots of good food, most of all ELiz's fabulous soup and the wraps and cookies (excuse my spelling) Louella (?) brought. Snow was falling hard when we arrived, all evening and still when we left. There must have been 6-8" of new snow from the day and evening.

Dreamy! New snow, sticking to the trees and sometimes to the skis. Slanting snow, which felt like needles if one was in full exposure. We stayed in trees...

Wow! this sounds like quite an experience. Daniel and I missed it because we went to Ms. Emily's CD release party which was excellent too! He had to work this morning, but things were dreamy with us too.

How fun! Yeah, we should definitely have this one repeat! I want to go next time! I just bought a very nifty BD headlamp for night prowls, but it sounds like you don't really need it if you have nice moonlight. Hopefully the weather will be clearer next time.

Wow so impressed. The hut is marvelous. Food and drinks are so nice. Skiing with full moon behind a snowstorm is still so nice. There is enough light to walk without a flashlight. I have never done anything like this. Now I know a snowshoe walk can be enjoyed up there anytime with prep for weather

As of yesterday afternoon, the warming hut only had a few pieces of firewood. I only saw a few logs inside. If you want a nice fire, you might need to bring up more. Some snow and some rain yesterday afternoon.

What do the trails do, Carol? Do they do that all on their own or do they need assistance?
