  • May 2, 2013 · 6:30 AM
  • This location is no longer available

Backpacking trips have a special sign-up procedure you must follow through. Please read. Trip will show as being full *ALL* the time.

As of now all 8 spots are taken/paid for - Wait list available in case a spots becomes available.

Max 6 backpackers plus two organizers 8 spaces, Wait-list is open.  No guests all members must be WSA members and signup individually for liability statement to hold true.

Backpacking permit of $8 per person paid to organizer must be done prior to your final rsvp. (if using paypal 55 cents go towards paypal fees, your responsibility,  $8.00 goes to me)

You must answer truthfully to the questions at sign-up.  This is not a first time beginner backpack trip.  Once your details are confirmed, please send payment of permit fee.  Once payment is received you will be placed in RSVP attending list.

Join us Elizabeth and Dave, organizers to the Grand Gulch region part of Cedar Mesa in Utah.  Its 3 1/2 hour drive from Grand Junction CO.

This trip is for moderately experienced backpackers.   Bring your own backpacking gear - please ask gear questions if you need a refresher.  I will be following up individually regarding trip preparation as time nears.

Gather in Grand Junction Wednesday May 1st (for long distance drivers) around 5pm and setup tent in backyard campout at our house Elizabeth and Dave the organizers aka The Barry's Hut, optional potlock at 6pm (open to what ever you want to bring - we have gas grill) arrive around 5pm or later much later ok for working folks in Denver.

Option two: If you are not driving several hours and are local, this stay at my home or potluck is optional, you are welcome to meet up at 6:30am at our house Thursday 5/2 morning for the pre arranged carpooling.  Option of meeting at Ranger Station not allowed or recommended - permit will not be valid if all participants are not present and on time.

The Backpack Trip

Denver folks arrive Wednesday after 5pm (late ok)

Thursday, May 2nd to Sunday, May 5th

We leave Grand Junction at 6:30am and drive approx 240 miles to Kane Gulch Ranger Station.

This backpack trip requires a shuttle to be worked out later.  This moderately difficult trip is 22.8 miles.  Trail conditions, segments of constructed trail in Kane Gulch; boot-worn trails, generally well-defined, in Grand gulch; and wash route, slick rock route, and occasional foot-worn trails in Bullet Canyon.  Elevation (altitude) approx 6,400 feet beginning and ending trailheads.  Water from perennials springs.  This is the most attractive segment of the 52 mile long Grand Gulch in this region. A gradual down hill hike to about 5,500 feet in first 15 miles then back up the last 13 miles.  We will do this in 4 days:  as 2 short days, 2 full days (three nights total).  This area is very rich in archaeological history.  Some key points are:  Turkey Pen Ruin, Stimper Arch, Fortress Canyon, Todie Canyon, Split Level Ruin, Coyote Canyon, Jail House Spring and Ruin, Perfect Kiva Ruin and more.  This is an amazing area for history and archaeology buffs and geology lovers.

I have updated google map information here. Kane's Gulch Ranger Station.

To read more about this area visit BLM website under Grand Gulch.

Dogs are not allowed due to archaeological preservation etc.

Link to backpacker story Kane Gulch Canyon he's got beautiful pictures.

Procedure for signing up on this trip:

All rsvp's are done at this WSA site only - a link was provided for CO Backpackers/campers meetup site in the Denver region.

Assure you can attend (time off work - Thur and Fri 5/2 and 5/3rd)

Your rsvp will automatically place you on this trip's wait-list

You must then send via snail mail to 648 Irish Walk Grand Junction, CO 81504.  Payment of $8 made out to me Elizabeth Barry (check, money order, no cash).  If using PayPal I WILL NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL FEES THEY WILL BE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY - therefore your cost is $8.55 send to [masked]

Include your name, email, your emergency contact name and his/her phone number.   You must first answer fully the questions asked when signing up on this site.

Once information and payment is received you are considered RSVP'd and will be moved from wait-list to attending list RSVPd.

Cancellation Reimbursements

No refunds unless someone from wait list takes over your spot.  I will not accept payments at the trail-head, in person, or after the trip.  Once replacement $ is received I will tear up your check or mail back as you wish.  Thank you.

Upon your request I can email you BLM's confirmation of our paid permit of 8 people $8 each with the details.  If I can't get 6 other participants we the organizers will have to eat the loss so we will see how this operation goes on future trips such as this one.

You will receive emails and possible phone calls and be acknowledged of your participation. This information also serves to contact you with final details, copies of topo maps if any, or last minute changes in plans.

You are responsible for transportation to and from gathering point - The Barry's Hut (our home). Participants can organize carpool by contacting each other.  I may be able to assist by providing phone and email addresses as needed without your prior consent for the purpose of carpooling.

Also, your email when signing up, attendance and/or rsvp is your understanding that by attending this meetup event you understand that backpacking has its inherit risks, including but not limited to all injuries including your death and/or that of your guests were there is no 911 help. You are responsible for your own safety, knowledge and carrying your own first-aid kit, and any evacuation costs that maybe associated with it, the equipment to keep you safe, and your travel through the back-country-not always on trails.   Meetup, Organizers and Assistant Organizers are not held responsible for you in any way.  All decisions are made with safety always being the top priority.  There is no cell reception not even close to this area. This full disclosure/consent statement is also posted here (link).

http://www.meetup.com/WesternSlopeAdventurers/messages/boards/thread/20292092

Please attend if you RSVPing yes in consideration for organizers, other members who are placed on wait list, and payment made for permit for your attendance. Its time consuming to plan, pay for, and put this together - your last minute cancellation will most likely be unfilled, and you still have to pay $8, no shows may place limitation on future trips. Its appreciated by most Meetup events and groups. Thanks for understanding this point.

Other $ you need is gas sharing in carpool, food before and after your trip.

RSVP has open and close sign-up dates - these dates are now to April 21st.

Please answer questions at signup - my phone number[masked] if you need to chat regarding level of experience, any discomfort, questions, etc.  Dave (husband and co-organizer) is handling the route logistics, topos etc of this trip his number is[masked] this is not an exploratory trip, we were there two years ago and it was an amazing trip !.  That should about do it for now - Thanks !

Ancient Ruins, Soaring Canyons Large Petroglyph Panels, with an uber-cool group of laid-back, knowledgeable and experienced backpackers. An almost perfect trip save for the lack of photos...

Plus a medley of 80's music, camp songs and questionable poetry.

Thanks to Liz and Dave for planning and leading this trip (as well as the car-pool). You guys are awesome squared.

One wonders what happened to the ancient Basketweaver, Hopi and Anasazi cultures. Maybe they stagnated into (wait for it) ruination.

    Hon, where's my soup?

Liz (or is it Eilizabeth) - I'm going to have to back out of this as the Mount Sherman (14'er) Season Opener was moved to this weekend and I will have limited 14'er time this summer. Will probably jump in on the Big Dominguez Canyon hike and to co-opt you and Dave for a Colorado Trail Section hike in September (the weekend after Labor Day). Keep the registration fee as you may need to buy a second compass (oh, wait a minute - you already have one...)

P.S. Trail Tuesdays in May are calling your name.
