Hike Serpent's Trail before the April Potluck

  • Apr 8, 2013 · 5:30 PM
  • This location is no longer available

What: Hike Serpent's Trail prior to the April Potluck.  Serpent's trail is 3.5 miles long and is a beautiful and moderately steep trail.  If you are beginning a hiking conditioning program or just want to get a little exercise this is a great option.  We will begin at the lower trailhead and hike approximately 1.75 miles to the upper trailhead which is the turnaround point.  This normally takes me one hour and twenty minutes at a moderate pace.  If you hike at a more conversational pace or want to stop to enjoy the views it may take longer.

Where:  Serpent's Trail is located 0.4 miles from the East Entrance to the Colorado National Monument.  Parking is available either at the Devil's Kitchen Picnic Area (where we will have the Potluck) or at the Devil's Kitchen Trailhead.  Take the first right turn after entering the monument for the Picnic Area, the trailhead parking lot is about 20 meters further on the left.  If the Ranger Station at the east entrance is manned you will need to either have a National Parks Card, a Colorado Monument Card, or pay $10.00 per vehicle to enter the Monument.

When:  We will start the hike at 5:30.  However if you arrive late or don't wish to hike the entire trail feel free to hit the trail at a later time.

Additional Information:  Please wear trail shoes or boots (running shoes are okay as well).  If the temperature is hot you should have water on the trail and a windshell jacket may be needed.

We had about 20 minutes of light steady rain followed by about 15 minutes of (lighter) drizzle. The hike was cold and wet but with some spectacular views of the storm system moving through the Monument. Thanks to Mary (McC) and Marjorie for coming out on on the hike. It's easy to push out of your (weather realated) comfort zone for 1-2 hours and gives you the opportunity to re-examine your clothing and equipment and "dial in" your hiking style.

forgot to say, Old Gordon has more rock on it but fewer switchbacks; they don't call it slickrock for nothing so my same criteria apply---

Lora, Yeah there is a decent sized storm rolling through. Thanks for the message. I will still be out this evening and will post another (15 April) hike prior to the (15 April) Potluck. If anyone has a preference for Serpent's Hill (a do-over), No Thoroughfare Canyon or Old Gordon let me know. We will probably turn around at the 45 minute mark so as to be at the Potluck at 7:00 p.m.

I'll drive over to the trailhead after work and see what conditions are like. I'll hike until it gets muddy or not at all if it already is.

I hope that everyone received the message that the Potluck for tonight has been postponed until next Monday. I will still be on Serpent's Trail at 5:30. The trail used to be an established road and is very hikeable - even in rain and snow - so - if you want to get some exercise in, pack a rain jacket. If you decide to show up early or late for the hike it is not a problem. I will be at the Parking Lot at 5:20.
