Canyoneering get together for safety.

Lets all bring some appetizers and drinks.

With all the news lately about canyoneering and the unfortunate accidents, I think we should come together as a group and talk about what we want to do as a group to keep ourselves safe and protect the great lands we have to play in.

Maybe we need to set some ground rules as to basics that we feel that everyone needs to know in order to go on these events.

How to protect ourselves and the club.

I am sure the more of us we have the greater we will be in finding the best solutions.

I think Doug has done a great job setting up all of these events for all of us. I also think this is too big of a job for one person to do. Koo Doo's  to Doug for being a great organizer and bring all of this to us.

I feel sure this one meeting will not take care of all the issues but it will give us a great start.

I think maybe we should start this on the message board and develop an agenda for what our first safety meeting should include. certainly not a bad idea to have this meeting, just a little ahead of ourselves I think. I also have lots of work to do.

If I can just throw out a couple of references for you to research coming from a background of having to rescue those in trouble. Take a look at the GAR model (http://www.uscg.mil/hq/nsfweb/foscr/ASTFOSCRSeminar/Presentations/Safety/ORM-GAR.pdf) and what having "situational awareness" means (http://dir-diver.com/en/knowledge/situational_awareness.html). These two concepts alone will greatly improve your perception of what it means to be safe. :)

I am in favor of moving this meetup if it will bring in more people and a week night is also OK with me but I am afraid we will lose some out of town people. If you have an opinion now is the time to post it.

You will not likely get much better attendance on another date....may have to have 2 meetings.

And by-the-way, I just noticed that you had RSVPed me for this event. Perhaps you should notify others more directly....by phone.

I could make it if you don't mind me showing up late. I have a ladies' reading group I conduct on Skype at 6. That is usually over in an hour or less.

    • like to refine a list of basic questions that we ask of potential participants for each event to learn not only emergency contact information but to assess their basic skill and experience status
    • develop a “trip plan’ form so people can let their significant others &/or emergency contact people know where the heck they are going and how to possibly find them if they become overdue.
    • see if it is realistic for WSA to take a leading role in reaching out to county sheriff search & rescue teams BEFORE an accident occurs; after all, the recent accidents were in the Moab area where there is likely to be a more highly trained recuse force vs. anywhere else in southern Utah.
    • Design a ‘mentoring’ plan to develop more ‘canyon leaders’ so we can get more basic trips on the calendar, like many of those in the immediate Moab/ Arches area as well as starting the ‘canyon leaders’ on things like Ding & Dang that may be non-technical but an opportunity to engage in little group management.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
