CHANGE-May - Trail Thursdays #1 - hike Lower Monument Canyon-Wedding Canyon Loop

Because of the recent rains, the Lunch Loops will not offer a good conditioning experience.  The ground will be saturated and betonite clay in the soil at Eagle's Tail and Eagle's Wing will be very, very slick.  So - we are switching things up and relocating the hike to Lower Monument Canyon.  In the event of additional heavy rains I will cancel the hike at 4:00 p.m. if necessary.

Option 1:  Hike Lower Monument Canyon and turn around.  Lower Monument Canyon is a moderate hike, 2.4 miles in and 2.4 miles out.  The trail will begin along a fence line and then gradually ascend into Lower Monument Canyon and end (turn around) at Independence Monument.

Option 2:  Hike Lower Monument Canyon into Wedding Canyon.  The distance is about the same, 4.8-5 miles and wedding canyon offers a "roller coaster" trail that will gradually descend into the same trailhead as Lower Monument Canyon.  Wedding Canyon will also be slightly muddier and slicker than Lower Monument Canyon.

Directions: The trailhead is unmarked and located on Fawn Lane.

To get there take Highway 340 (which is also Broadway).

Fawn Lane is located between Fruita and Grand Junction on a small gravel road toward the west, leading to a dirt parking lot.

The turn into Fawn Lane looks like a driveway.  Refer to the map at the top of the page for directions.

Bring:

  • A headlamp or flashlight
  • Rain Jacket/Shell Jacket and (as an option) Rain Pants
  • Sturdy trail shoes or light weight hiking boots
  • Water & maybe a snack
  • Trekking poles (again optional) as the trail will be muddy and Wedding Canyon is steep on the descent
  • Camera

Additonal Information:

Dogs:  No hounds allowed in the Colorado National Monument

Cost:  Free since we are not parking within the park boundary

Hiking is risky. Every year people are hurt and killed because they go beyond their abilities, get lost, or bring the wrong gear. I research hikes and rely on various sources, but I can't vouch for their accuracy. I am not a professional guide - you are responsible for yourself. By signing up for this hike you acknowledge that you are solely responsible for your own safety and will do the necessary research to understand the conditions of this hike and the gear you personally require.

iQue verga incredible'! Wow! There was no shortage of verga views on this hike! And, the rocks, the trail and the clouds were the most colorful I have ever seen on the Western Slope. Thank you so much Mike, for hosting this terrific event! I recommend that trail for everyone to try if they want to see awesome vistas and do an fantastic five mile trip with gentle to moderate incline and descents! No enterance fee required, some built in steps, some unimproved trail, but I did it with street shoes. GREAT!

Thanks to David & Elizabeth and Daniel and Sophia. We were able to take advantage of the first dry day this week to do a leisurely five mile loop from lower monument canyon into wedding canyon. The trail was dry the weather was good (albeit a little humid) with rain over the monument and verga over the book cliffs.
