Full Moon Hike --- the Orange Dome

Full Moon Hike to

             the Orange Dome

We will probably reach the top of the Dome in time to view the sunset and see the moon well up in the sky by the time the solar orb disappears.

While we will not make this a Full Moon potluck hike (those will start when it's a little warner next month), I still suggest you may want to bring along some goodies for yourself &/or to share; and a maybe hot beverage,

WHEN/WHERE:

Meet at Doug & Mary's house at 7 PM and we'll walk right from the front door. Plan to be out about 2.5 hours but you can turn back sooner if you like.

BRING:

  • Headlamp or flashlight (for the shadowy areas there always seem to be with a full moon)
  • Dress for warm start & hiking then cooling off when we reach the top and as evening cools
  • Trekking poles (optional but some people will like them on some loose gravelly stuff we will walk over)
  • Snacks, finger foods, chocolate or small yummies to share
  • Water & optional hot beverage
  • Musical instruments (small, portable; or, larger and a porter to carry it)
  • Small backpack to carry all your stuff

KIDS &/or FIDO:

This is a pretty easy hike - about 45 minutes one way so feel welcome to bring your hiking youngsters and since we will be on BLM lands - Kodel Canyon trails - the family dog is welcome.

OPTIONAL:

Sometimes when we come up here for the full moon Ruxton or Andy or Beth bring a rope and rappelling gear. If you may be interested in being introduced to rappelling or have done some and want to do a bit more this evening, please mention that in your RSVP. If you do want to do this please bring a helmet (can be climbing, bike, boating, ski helmet). If you do not have other gear, that is OK we can bring loaner gear.

Beautiful area--like to explore it more. The dome had great views!

A great hike with something for everyone. Hounds, snacks at the top of the Dome and the option to go at a moderate conversational pace or hike fast. I tried to stay in the hiking slip-stream of Mary (Hertert) but it's hard, man, it's hard. She moves efficiently and very fast (kind of like a trail ninja but without the throwing stars or ninja claws). Anyway it was a fun hike and a precursor to the upcoming "Full Moon Potlucks".

Timeless, mysterious, beautiful, curved, accomodating. Best view of sunset and moonrise; a wonderful place to sit in the changing lights of dusk into moon glow.

This was a fun, and rather adventurous hike. I opted to follow a couple of our fast hiking boys who were trying to find a different route to the Orange Dome. Sounded like fun, but after walking around the cliffs for a little while trying to figure out if there was a safe way down, I started thinking...maybe we should have listened to Doug and Mary's advice... :) In the end, it worked out well. We were able to uncover a new way down the rock and had a lot of fun exploring in the process!

Good folks, full moon, Orange Dome, a few canines . . . what could be a better way to spend a mid-week evening. Thanks, friends.

Adventurous climb up where a few of us detoured to the slab to the northwest of the Dome. We were kind of cliffed out, but we found a way back to the trail on the east side. After summiting we ended up detouring again, and ran into the group again. It was great hanging out with fun people in beautiful country with lots of light from a full moon!

Loved it! What a fantastic evening - full moon rising, sun setting, and perfect weather! Thanks Doug!

That dome is such a fine view point, for western dusk and moon rising. The hike up to it was quite a work-out for me, which I appreciate. The hike down was moonlit, mellow, rewarding.

I am super excited about a full moon hike, but I just got slammed with an infection. Next time!

Bummer - get well and come on outdoors when you have. We will start next month with the Full Moon hike also incorporating a potluck so it'll be really fun and tasty too. Plan to come to all of those May-October.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
