HIKE Monument Canyon - UP or dowN (or your own options)

HIKE Monument Canyon

UP or dowN  with a car shuttle

(or your own options)

Those who want a normal evening's exercise will drive to the top of Monument Canyon and hike down the 6 miles from Rim Rock Drive trailhead to the trailhead off CO Hwy 340/ Broadway.

Wanting more exercise than that? Then you can opt to walk the 6 miles UP HILL to Rim Rock Drive trailhead.

We will swap cars at the meeting place so that, if I am starting at the bottom and hiking up, someone who plans to hike down will take my car UP and I will take theirs to the lower end point. This way each person ends their hike being able to drive their own car to home, Hot Tomato or where ever.

This hike is open to all-comers. If you want to do some variation other than the 2 I have presented, you are welcome to do that, such as take a short walk to the Coke Ovens or hike from the bottom to Independence Rock then back down, etc.

Each person will be encouraged to 'go your own pace' and do not feel obligated or pressured to hike faster or slower than you choose.

WHEN/ WHERE:

Meet at 6 PM at the parking lot right along CO Hwy 340 where Rim Rock Drive takes off.

Plan to be out as long as 6 miles, one way or the other takes you.

BRING:

  • sturdy running-type shoes or light hiking boots
  • dress for variable weather but be prepared for lots of sun (broad hat, long sleeves/legs?)
  • trekking poles (optional, if you like them)
  • water
  • snacks (should always be in your pack)
  • headlamp (should always be in your pack, with spare batteries)

DOGS:

Its another of those hikes in CO Natl Monument where they say 2-footed hikers Yes, domesticated 4-footed hikers, No.

COST:

We will be after normal fee collection hours for the Monument so I think it will be Free.

RSVP:

In your RSVP please state your preference for hiking from the top down or bottom up?

I had only been on parts of that hike previously and it was nice to see the entire route. Great choice for an evening hike!!

Great and challenging hike. Thanks Doug for encouraging me to go the whole way up!

The UP group and the hike itself were way fun. Lots of wind at bottom and top but very calm in the canyon itself. Look at the local rock stars we got a few distant photos of:well, distant by iPhone camera standards. They were no more than 100' away.

Doug, I will have to relunctantly back out as I hiked Liberty Cap from the Wildwood Trailhead to the Rimrock Parking Lot (and back) today and (after hiking Storm King and Devil's/Kodel Canyons this weekend) my ankles need a day of rest.
Apologies and I will buy you a beer at the Hot Tomato "post hike" next time.

Pls look on the WSA calendar for events this TH and SAT. And, yes they left your rope in Mary's car 2 weeks ago then we kicked it into a pool of motor oil on the garage floor last week. Do you still want it back?

We often do after Tuesday energy burners. I am not so sure though that in my case, I may consume more post-hike calories than I burn during the event. The doctor tells me that is not the way it is supposed to work but . . . ahh the fun and temptation.

Now that I've got my Montrose Hogback thing Tuesdays and Fridays starting May 14th, I will probably beg off. But I will see how the RSVPs go and decide as it approaches. Pretty sure it would be in poor taste to bag your own event, but if it looks like it'll just be me on the 21st, I will try to head up for this hike? Capice?
