Fourteener Cronicles - Mount Sneffels from Yankee Boy Basin

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Beth has a good group of us together to do Mount Sneffels this weekend so we should still be doing the hike in her memory, er... honor, well.. no one gets the day off...we still have to do it!!!

About the hike: While this is the easiest route on Sneffels one must be in condition to do the long scree slope to the saddle and the boulder scramble in the Lavender Col (couloir) close to the peak. The scramble up the Col is covered with talus and dirt, too loose to support a trail.  It is an ideal route for those who have climbed several of the easy peaks and wants a taste of what a harder peak looks like.  While the route is a modest 7 miles, the majority of the 3,450 elevation is earned in the last third of the route and the word 'stairmaster' will cross your mind every couple of steps here.  No guests without leaders pre-approval.

My requirements for accommodations was to find a place that would take reservations so we would have a reserved place to stay, we would be together and have some restroom facilities.  Best option was to car camp weekend at the Ridgeway State Park arriving Friday evening.

Early Saturday morning (7 am) drive to Yankee Boy Basin, parking at the vault restroom parking area trailhead.  Higher clearance 4 wheel drive, like a SUV required and we will car pool in.  Please indicate in your registration if you can drive into the basin with others. Return to car camp Ridgeway State Park Saturday evening, hot coin op (?) showers available.  On Sunday morning (not 7 am) there will be an bonus 4.5 hour hike, moderate class to the Weehawken Alpine Mine above and just west of Ouray.

As all their tent sites too small I have reserved 2 65' long pull thru type camping spots next to each other, both have covered picnic table.  Each site is limited to 2 cars so encourage group to car pool into the park.   Camping space is $10 per hiker for both nights, as a State Park there is an entry fee per vehicle.  I am throwing an air mattress into back of my SUV, tents could be set up either on pad or just off the pad.

Both Friday and Saturday nights will include a social hour before dinner.  Bring your favorite beverage and snacks to share with group.

Golly darn. I understand, and thanks for watching the weather and your safety (and fun!) consciousness. I have seen my hair stand on end once in the highcountry and don't need to see that again! Thanks Lon. Sneffels isn't going anywhere, so we'll get there later. Dee-Dee

Lon, thank you for planning this and for your foresight. The forecast has completely changed and there is 30% chance of rain/thunder in the low country, which means 100% for the high. Gunny Gorge here I come!

Good Evening Friends! With much apprehension over the extensive thunderstorm forecast for this weekend that I am postponing this weekend's trip for a later date. Sneffels is a classic hike and I will be reposting the trip when we can best enjoy the day.

Sounds fine. Lets talk about where to meet up. Probably my house so we can leave a car here. my cell[masked]

Plan for all 10 of us is to meet 7:00 am Saturday in Ridgway, two blocks west of the main intersection (stoplight) is the town park, on the east side of the park is a parking lot where we will meet and leave cars. My cell is[masked] and I drive a red Toyota 4 Runner. At this point I only have two confirmed SUVs (mine and Suzy's) so current plan is 9 of us will ride in the two SUVs and Paul S rides his motorcycle in as he offered. If Rick or Todd have an SUV they would drive in we will go with 3 SUVs. Final plan Saturday morning at 7am. On the hike bring 2 liters of water, lunch, gorp, sun screen and good rain gear, poles good for the trail and scree slope, but not needed in the rock filled chute to the summit. Gaitors favored by some in the scree field if low top shoes.

Respond comments on questions of any details I have missed.

July 9th 8:22 PM Welcome to Rick Hopkins and Todd Hildebrandt as back to 10 total. Appreciate if you two would email me if you plan to join us Friday and or Saturday evening camping in Ridgway State Park. We have room for up to 10 but currently show Dee Dee, Brenna, myself, Mike on Saturday evening only camping confirms. Reservation is under my name for congruent sites 051 and 049HA, reservation sequential numbers[masked] and ....046. Expect to pay a car fee upon entry. Limited to 4 cars but that is not a concern with the low number camping. We will be camping among campers in the Park as I was looking for a guaranteed camping spot for late arrival. The availability of nice restrooms, picnic tables and showers a plus.

Paul here...I'll have my motorcycle and if I need it I'll have it. I live in Montrose and won't be camping. I'll probably join you on Sunday for the Weehawken hike, too. Where exactly are you meeting at 7 am? I have a pass to the park and can meet you there.

I'm pretty sure this particular weekend is the busiest in southwestern Colorado. Yoga Festival, Startup Weekend, Telluride Venture Accelerator, the Ride Festival -- oy! I bequeath my spot to a deserving lad or lass.

I will be planning on coming in Friday evening. I do not have a high clearance vehicle. Is there anyone from Grand Junction that will be headed down friday evening that would be open to carpool to cut down on the the amount of cars at Ridgeway State park. I can get to grand juction about 5:30 pm after I get off work in glenwood springs at 3:30 pm. thanks

    Hi, waiting list person here.
I hiked the first 2/3 a couple years ago. It was post leg injury so wasn't up to the last bit. If I move into place to do this hike, note that I don't have a high clearance vehicle.

I have a Land Rover Discovery, capable of carrying 4 others comfortably. I would drive in from Telluride and meet you in Ridgway the morning of the hike.

Good Evening Suzy! Highlander is perfect, taking my 4 Runner, and the only speed once we get into the basin is slow but time to take in the beauty..

I just updated the camping accommodations, not exactly roughing it like Beth's trip and we will have neighbors.......

    • Suzy N.

OK! I will be able to take 3-4 people with me for the ride up to the trailhead. I am not sure yet about the camping and Weehawken hike. Will have to wait and see how things pan out with my schedule that week/end. Sounds really fun, though!
