Glade Park Movie and Camping Weekend at Mud Springs Campground, Glade Park.

Friday, July 19 to Sunday, July 21.
Escape the heat in the Grand Valley! Come join us for a fun and relaxing weekend up on Glade Park. (FRAN PARKER is organizing, Dee-Dee Vallez is posting and helping out) .
We’ll be camping at the BLM’s Mud Springs Campground on Friday and Saturday nights, have lots of hiking/biking options on Saturday and Sunday, and can go to “Movies Under the Stars” at the Glade Park Volunteer Fire Department on Friday night.

Come up anytime after noon on Friday and camp either one or two nights. The fee for group sites is $10 per night per 2 vehicles.

The campground is located within a small aspen grove and each site contains a fire ring and grill. Tents, small RVs, travel trailers and pop-up campers are okay. Pit toilets are available. The campground also has fresh spring water for drinking. Hiking, horseback riding, biking, and off-highway vehicles on designated trails only and outside the camping area. Fishing available in surrounding area.

Attendance at the Glade Park movie is optional, but if you’ve never been before, it is a fun event that you should try at least once. Friday night’s movies is “Thor.” The movie is free, but the Glade Park Fire Department raises funds through its grill and concession stands. The grill opens at 6, there is live entertainment at 7, and the movie starts around 8. Bring a lawn chair, a jacket and a blanket and enjoy the small community atmosphere. If you choose not to go to the movie, Friday night dinner is on your own.

On Saturday, we can hike or bike any number of trails in the area. The closest trails – Turkey Flats, Hay Press, Fruita Reservoir are relatively short (3-5 miles out and back), though it is possible to combine several of them into a longer loop.  Enochs Lake is popular for fishing, and apparently offers a nice hike as well. The Potholes is a swimming hole on the Little Dolores River, but it may attract a younger & rowdier crowd.

The more ambitious who can stand the heat and gnats may want to hike the Knowles, Mee, or Jones Canyon trails accessible from the western end of Glade Park.

Saturday night dinner will be potluck with a Mexican theme. On Sunday, hang around and hike/bike some more or have a more leisurely morning as you wish.

Directions: From the intersection of First Street and Grand Avenue in Grand Junction, travel west on Grand Avenue (Highway 340) for approximately one mile and turn left on Monument Road. Turn left again on D Road. D Road becomes Rosevale Road. Turn right onto Little Park Road. Travel 10 miles on Little Park Rd until it intersects DS Rd. Go left on to DS road and travel a little over a mile to 16.5 Rd at the Glade Park Store intersection, turn left onto 16 1/2 Rd, travel south, 6 1/2 miles, Mud Springs Campground is on your right.
In your RSVP, please indicate whether you’ll be camping Friday night, Saturday night or both, if you intend to go to the movie on Friday night, and what you plan to bring for Saturday night’s potluck.

What a fun weekend! We were scared off on Friday night by the 70% chance of rain (which didn't materialize), and missed the movie. But, we got up there before 9am the next morning, set up our tents in a beautiful aspen grove, and went on a great hike. The wildflowers were fabulous, as were the views - forests, meadows, a couple of lakes, a few scenic overlooks.

In the afternoon, we returned to the campground and enjoyed bluegrass music being played by musicians who get together at Mud Springs every year to relax, play, and visit with friends. They start jamming, and some wander from campsite to campsite, joining different groups at different time. We had a great Mexican dinner, wandered around and listened to more music, and crawled into our tents for a good night's rest. On Sunday, we had a lazy morning at camp, with Dee-Dee's wonderful breakfast. We went on a short hike before returning to our campsite for lunch. We'll definitely go back to Mud Springs to camp again.

The 3 participants, myself, Jeanne Maraschin and Fran Parker are omitting the Friday night schedule for this event due to rain. We plan on getting to Mud Springs at 8 am Saturday morning and taking our plans from there. TTFN (ta, ta, for now).

I would enjoy this outing. I will be high in Ice Basin, surrounded by high 13ers.

It sounds like great fun but alas I can't attend that weekend. I hope you get a good response and there will be an encore.

I hope we get a good response, too. Mud Springs is a quiet, little, unappreciated (I think) campground. We may be able to repeat sometime in the fall, but the movies finish up in August. And, there's always next year!

How did that 20.00 price get in there? I need to ammend that. According to Fran Parker, It's $10. per night per 2 vehicles. Not sure if that means $5.00 per one vehicle. I'll get this updated.
And the move is free, but they take donations for the Glade Park Fire Department.

No -- it's $10 per night for the group sites, per 2 vehicles. If there is one vehicle, it's still $10 per night. My interpretation (though I will double check) is that it's $20/night for 3 or 4 vehicles. I don't think there's a rule about how many vehicles you can have per campsite, but we need to limit them since there isn't a huge amount of space for parking. I'll figure this all out when we have a better idea of how many people want to go.

Friday night movie "Thor" - Thor is a 2011 American superhero film based on the comic book character of the same name published by Marvel Comics. It is the fourth film released as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film was directed by Kenneth Branagh, The film tells the story of Thor, the crown prince of Asgard, who is exiled from his homeland to Earth. While there, he forms a relationship with Jane Foster, a scientist. However, Thor must stop his adopted brother Loki, who intends to become the new king of Asgard.

Hmmm, has some local Grand Junction Loki lore in it. Makes this even niftier as GJ is home to Loki outdoor wear.
