Paddling and/or Exploring Split Mountain

Camp and/or Paddle Split Mountain Saturday & Sunday Sept
7 & 8

Enjoy an amazing, fun, beautiful (did we say beautiful?) river trip at
Dinosaur National Park! Two nights camping, two days on the Green River at Split
Mountain. Class 2-3.  Must have your own boat, or arrange for a seat yourself on
someone else's boat. Will need camping gear and food.

If we can car pool from the Capp's house at 9:00, then we'll have time to hike and tour around Dinosaur Monument. We will arrive at Split Mountain (2 1/2 hours drive from Grand Junction) early in the day to set up camp. Then we'll paddle Split Mountain twice, once on Saturday and once on Sunday, and then return home Sunday afternoon.

Join us for one or both days. Bring your own food and plenty of desserts to share. Nominal fee to share permit and camping reservation cost. If you do not want to paddle, that is fine. It is a beautiful place with a lot to offer (an amazing museum quarry like no other, hiking, Rosie's farm, and lots of petroglyphs).

Join us at the campsite at Split Mountain. Look for a white Chevy Astro van. Or meet at the Capp's house at 9:00am Friday morning for car pooling.

Call Susan Capps  at[masked] or Laney Heath[masked] for more information.

Must know who is attending before 8/27/13 for permit registration purposes.

Well...I uploaded photos and managed to get several of them to load twice ..??? I am about as "tech savvy" as a chipmunk so when I discovered it, I thought my camera must be stuttering but my kid said, "No Dad, you clicked on the same picture twice..!"
OH Well,.. If you blink between pictures, some of them go away.

May I please meet with you soon to formulate a PR & marketing strategy for REIN ( and maybe for WSA too)?

Yes of course. Any time this Friday after 10am?

The water level needed to be a bit higher for someone like me with such a short attention spam...I had to pay attention all day to keep from hitting rocks, and I'm not used to paying that much attention for that long..Gave me a head-ache...!!
However, as per usual and the whining aside, it was another great outing with a fun group of campers. Camp site even had flush toilets and a live scorpion in the urinal..! Doesn't get any better than that. Will try to post some pics when time allows.

The Green River canyon is exceptionally beautiful, water level was good for light rafts and kayaks, weather was perfect on Saturday, company was excellent! Thanks everyone for a wonderful day on the river and a fun camping weekend!

Beautiful beautiful area. Spectacular. I loved the river, could have used just a bit more water, but sure did keep us all awake.

The Green River was low, so the rapids were kinda boney. The surrounding scenery was dramatic in cliffiness and geology showing in those cliffs. Awesome group, great food, nice campground, bright milky way showed up in the dark sky.

    1Doug,
We need to get it cooked (doesn't take much time),eaten(takes even less time) and cleaned up (Don't know about this as I have never done dishes.?) so I'm not sure about the breakfast timing. It all depends on when everyone wants to get on the river. I hear it is almost 1 hour car ride up-stream to the put-in and appx. 12 miles of river run back to camp @appx. 3mph =4 hrs plus 2 hr morning boat inflates/lunch/pee stops etc...means 7 hours with no wind or hikes or problems..? If we leave camp at 9:00AM and do 7 hrs. it puts us back in camp at 4:00PM and there is still a 2 hr. round trip for some folks to go get vehicles left up-stream for another run on Sunday. I think we should figure on eating no later than 8:00AM to be sure we leave camp by 9:00. ..but...Hey.. Anything is fine with me.. I'm just along for the giggles..! 3D

With Mary's change of plans I am going to dry dock my boat for the weekend and go canyoneering I think.

Sorry all. Was looking forward to this but my art calendar and weekend just got more complicated. Enjoy those 3Doug pancakes on my behalf.

    Susan,
I forgot to tell you that I also plan on doing coffee and my famous stuffed French Toast for breakfast for everyone on Sat morning so folks don't have to eat instant oat meal... unless they want to or are allergic to strawberries, cream cheese and whipped cream..??
Along with my pots/pans/kitchen set-up, I will plan on bringing my blaster and community dish washing kit to heat water and do dishes. If you think of anything else, let me know. I have lots of stuff..!

Mary cannot leave Friday. She has commitments all day and evening. How early do we need to get there for French Toast, 3Doug?

    Susan,
As per our phone conversation, I will plan on doing my Dutch Oven fried chicken and sweet tater fries for Sat PM. dinner. It sounds like there may be as many as 11-12 folks so I will bring enough for everyone. (Hopefully there will be some vegetarians or those who don't like chicken so we can have second helpings).
If others will bring salads/side dishes/desserts to compliment this meal it will give me more time to burn the fries.

I just reserved a group campsite for the night of Friday and Saturday Sept 6 & 7 at Split Mountain Group Camping Site #A. I asked for the maximum of 25 people, so anyone who would like to go and hike or whatever, there is plenty of room. I think it is best if we all fend for ourselves with food, and just bring extra desserts to share. Call me at[masked] for any questions.
