FULL MOON HIKE --- From Gold Star to Liberty Cap trailheads

Gold Star Canyon trailhead to Liberty Cap trailhead (well described on

Up the Cap or not will be optional

I wanted to do this hike with the October full moon but with the Monument closed  . . . we had to go elsewhere for that one, so here we are. It'll be FUN.

Moon rises ~3 PM andsun sets ~4:45 PM so we will start the hike with the moon in the sky and the sun already long gone.

The 'hike' will involve setting up a car shuttle so we have some end of the hike cars at Liberty Cap (Wildwood) trailhead.

The photo below, from shows much of our route.

Meet at 5:45 PM at Wildwood trailhead to leave cars for the car shuttle. If you cannot be there at this time, meet at Gold Star trailhead at 6 PM.

Please be a Wildwood at 5:45 if at all possible. If we end up with too few cars at this end it makes the shuttle very difficult to do after the hike.

• Strudy shoes or light hiking boots

• Trekking poles if you like them

• HEADLAMP (read REI: How to select a headlamp)

• Water

• Snack

• Clothing for the weather, including cooler weather after dark and possibly breezy

If you are or want to be a regular evening hiker with WSA PLEASE get a good headlamp.

Please do not count on using a handheld light

There are too many times on our hikes that you need your hands for balance, scrambling, to catch a stumble . . . a hand held light just is not the tool for winter evening hikes.

It would be a great hike for FIDO but . . . Monument rules say NO DOGS

Sorry we missed you. I will not tell you it was a great hike. See you Saturday for a canyoneering related day or are you off to Telluride?

Numbers got down to two so Scott and I decided to hike where he had not been before and I am always ready to go up to: we hiked up the trail and finished off with the little climb to the top of Liberty Cap. Perfect full moon sky (well, 80% of full but just a bright as many 100% nights), barely an occasional wisp of a breeze and the usual gorgeous light show of the Grand Valley spread beneath us. Thanks for being there, Scott. It was a pleasure to spend the evening with you.

I'm going to ditch this hike for Mary's dog hike. The dogs have been crazy at home w/o all their usual exercise...

Sorry had to change to not attending. I enjoy full moon hikes, but given that I'm leading an early morning hike the next day, I'm going to have to miss this one.
