well after waiting closer to the weekend for weather improvements it's only becoming too clear that it's more then I like for new backpackers to experience winter storm. Here is our weather info below. I hate to say it but we are striking out to rain and cold again. I'll call everyone tonight. let's see what we can do in may I'm so sorry Everyone

GJ sets record low; bigger weather changes on the way

A record low in Grand Junction this morning is a harbinger of bigger changes in the weather on the Western Slope this weekend. The National Weather Service reported the temperature at Grand Junction Regional Airport dropped to 28 degrees at 4:54 a.m., breaking the previous record of 29, which was set in 1958. Temperatures are expected to rebound into the mid-60s today and mid-70s Friday before a strong, late-season wintry storm moves into western Colorado on Saturday. Forecasters say southwest winds will become gusty Friday into Saturday and moisture will increase over the area Friday night into Saturda

saturday expected weather. Should be a nice warm day in the 60s with increasing chance of precipitation of shower increasing all away up to 90% by five and 6 PM. It certainly seems like we're going to have a shower or more. At this time I don't plan to cancel the trip for showers. We do not have to ford any rivers. Please make sure that your tent is seam sealed protected for rain and you have rain gear for hiking. You can put a garbage bag over your backpack or use the garbage back to put the things inside your backpack in a bag to protect from wetness especially sleeping bag and clothing.

Do you have to apply seam sealer to the whole tent, or just the seam? I know that sounds weird, but the bottle I bought is confusing

      April 23, 2014

    • Elizabeth B.

I seam seal inside and out I know that's redundant but I don't do it every year. Set the tent up, do the seams leave it a day to dry. Sprinkle a bit of talcum powder or corn starch on the floor and pack away. This way if the seam is not 100% dry it won't stick your tent together

Thanks for the update having grown up in Colorado all you have to do is wait 5 minutes and the weather can change. However being prepared is essential. I have been in snow on the Mesa in July.

    OR
Does anyone have a two person tent they'd like to share? Also share it packing in and out?

been going back and forth on trip beginning on saturday then friday now back saturday..... uhh - I have an event that ends at 2pm Saturday, I'm going to start driving towards trailhead then from the GJ mall area. I'll have everything in the car. swing by City Market to meet other coming on trip then on to the trailhead. Sunsets around 730 to 8pm so will have enough daylight now. Sunday I need to be at the college by 1:30pm so I'll start hiking early in the morning. Thanks everyone !

    April 2, 2014

    • Mike W.

So we will start the hike/backpack Saturday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. and will also start the return hike out of Big Dominguez at around 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning? Liz we could also move to a different weekend in April or May - RSVPs are not open so you have plenty of flexibility with the date of this trip.

      April 2, 2014

    • Elizabeth B.

Only if I don't loose interest from class participants !! another concern is for newbies to be cold at night not all that warm out yet .... well, I'll discuss in class cause April is busy and may is better warmer. ... TBD I guess we can "table" it ....
