Montrose Area April Potluck

Gone are the sub-zero days, and...

Onward to the warmer pursuits of spring (and summer can't be far behind, RIGHT?). Warmer temps are here and we're starting to switch gears with our menu planning.  We're thinking of getting back to cooking lighter, easier stuff we can have before or after an evening bike ride, brisk walk with your dog, a hike or a paddle.  Bring a dish - appetizer, salad, entree, or dessert - that says, "Ahh, SPRING," to you.

Bring some libations to drink in moderation and enjoy a delicious meal with friends old and new. We can talk about ideas for spring and summer activities.

So many exciting new places to explore for a day, or an extended weekend.

It's gonna be another "sweet" season of adventures!  Come on over for a laid-back evening and celebrate the wonderful friendships and activities our group has brought us in WSA.

I enjoyed meeting local WSAers I still hadn't met before; and I may still not have their names right: George and his wife, Allyson, 3Doug, Sanders (shared background in Maine and Alaska and playing hockey) and Charlie! I missed Paul though!

Our potlucks are so fun! Great to see everyone. And, oh, the food . . . several gourmet cooks in this group! Thanks to Suzy for hosting. To everyone who couldn't make it, hope to see you at our next potluck on May 31st.

    • Suzy N.

Jeff told me today they won't be able to host on the 31st after all, as they'll have just returned from their big, fun canyoneering trip and it's a lot to try to do in 2 days when you need a vacation after your vacation. Lesson learned - always talk to your other half first! So we'll need another venue for May. We can always have a big potluck picnic somewhere on a nice day. We'll see!

OK... I have a pair of eyeglasses and a rain jacket left behind here. Are the glasses yours, Mary Jane, with rounder-shaped lenses? The jacket is purple, with a black collar. Let me know!

    April 26, 2014

    • Suzy N.

OK, mystery solved - Mary Jane's jacket and Jeff's glasses. Hope you wore them on the drive (3 blocks) home!

Another fun event with excellent food. As always, hard on any "weight-loss" diet. It was great to see everyone again and other than me knocking over the 4 socket candle holder in the hall on the way in, and Charlie and I almost lighting the house on fire with the alcohol stove, it was fairly uneventful. Everyone behaved themselves pretty well. Thanks Susy...You are awesome..!!

What a delightful gathering! Thanks to all who attended...and brought so much YUMMY food (and the wines!) Oh, my gosh, we have some great foodies here! I think we're all in agreement when I say that Three Doug's asparagus soup and tarragon garlic bread, the Heads' chicken stew, and Mary Jane's amazing salad, were the big hits of the evening, but there were several other SUPER-delicious yummies as well. Oh! And the chocolates from Mouse's! I know it's a bit much to talk about the food, but it was just SO good. I am excited about future outings and gatherings we discussed. The Bridge of Heaven hike is definitely on the "must-do" list for the Ouray area, and we'll have to get out on the Perimeter Trail soon, as it sounds like it will be good to do (maybe just a little muddy in spots) once this weather passes and temps soar again. I have "Fourteener Fever". Lots of GREAT ideas discussed, and so many fun events to put on the calendar in the months ahead. Stay tuned!

Yes, it's a bit blustery outside tonight, but the company will be warm and fun. Here are some easy directions:
Coming from either direction - turn off Hwy 50/S. Townsend Ave. (Hwy 550 to S. Townsend) onto E. Niagara Rd. At the second stop sign, turn right onto 6700 Rd. Follow 6700 Rd. to bottom of the hill, where it runs straight into The Glens. You'll pass the Glens sign and come to a stop sign. Turn right onto Glen View Dr. Go around the curve, passing mailboxes on the left. You'll see my house on the corner, behind the mailboxes. Make an immediate left onto Glen Oak Drive. My front door is green, and my lawn will get greener after the rain! ;-) Looking forward to a great evening!

At 7:30 pm I'll be finished operating the computerized multi-media at our 6pm church service at Grace CC, to be able to come late to our next door neighbor friend's extravaganza...Suzy Q's party! I should have updated/enlarged the WSA slide show we presented at our potluck 2 months ago in case Suzy wanted to include that. (Wish I had been able to go to Paul's potluck - what will we do without him tonight!?) Look forward to meeting some WSAers for the first time. I met 30 for the first time at the last GJ potluck! Doug is a hoot! Let's firm up the location for the May potluck, while we're at Suzy's tonight, to make it easier and earlier to build momentum and planning. We have a nice patio, grill and outdoor furniture and huge back yard for a potluck but we'll be in Utah Escalante Death Holly May 22 to 29. I wish Travis from Durango could join us tonight.

wow - you were going to make balloon place cards? How Martha of you.

      April 25, 2014

    • Suzy N.

No, the cute tissue flower hats. The vid was the one of the little girl wearing the smaller flower version, tossing the confetti. My Martha days were ever so brief. "Back in the day" in Boston. You can't really have an actual job and do all that, walking into the manicured "woods" of your posh Connecticut estate to collect pinecones for gold-leafing.... "So easy!"

Off to Denver to attend another kid sporting event. I'll be thinking of you while driving through the blizzard.

    April 25, 2014

I'm going to bring my famous sausage (turkey) balls instead since we need a meat for the carnivores. :-)

    April 25, 2014

  • Suzy N.

I'm also gonna make a cucumber salad with a great toasted sesame oil and rice wine vinegar dressing, with chopped green onions and peanuts sprinkled over it. It's SO good! I'll make extra raviolis, too. Bring your appetites!

  • Three D.

One of my favorite anticipations of Spring (right after the friggin' wind and frost stopping) is the hunt for wild asparagus. I have spotted a few of the intrepid little buggers peaking up along my secret ditch bank and the tarragon is on the rise in my herb garden. Therefore, I have decided to bring my traditional, Indonesian clay pot of creamed asparagus soup and tarragon infused, crispy buttered garlic bread.

Let me bring a bottle of sparkling wine down from Ouray with Mouse' s chocolates. Yum!

    2 · April 23, 2014

    • Suzy N.

      Fabulous! Luuuuuve that Mouse's chocolate!

      1 · April 23, 2014

  • Suzy N.

It would be nice to have a bubbly toast to spring with dessert, so a couple more bottles of sparkling wine (rosé, Cava, Champagne, Prosecco, Asti...) would be terrific. I picked up a Moscato rosé to try. I am planning on making a cold pesto pasta salad, with mini cheese raviolis. If you'd like to tell us what you're planning to bring (when you decide), that would be great. Don't want to end up with just veggies and dips! ;-)

    1 · April 22, 2014

  • Three D.

I'll try to come if I don't forget. May not "switch gears" into "lighter food" though... Most likely some type of meat and taters or if the rain/snow/hail of today doesn't stop bothering me, I'll bring a pot of my famous Long-Underwear-Chili

    April 13, 2014

    • Suzy N.

OK, you had me at Long Underwear! You better NOT fergit!!! How about that crazy weather? Don't know whether to ski the last days of groomed trails on the Mesa this week, or get back down into the Gunny Gorge on the Ute Trail again! I think, maybe, BOTH! This precip has to stop now, so we can get up the roads for either. It was in the 70's and gorgeous when Lori and I did a spur-of-the-moment hike down and up the Ute late last Thursday afternoon. Huff! Puff! Goooood hike!

HI friends, I'm back from icy Alaska and eager to share stories and laughter. But, I just realized that it is Ouray's Senior Prom night. We take photos and watch the procession through the Beaumont early evening, so unsure if I can make it down the hill on time. Will research prom plans, 9
