Full Moon Hike-bring potluck/picnic dinner-Lemon Squeezer on Mt. Garfield trail

Full Moon Hike (81.7% full)

bring potluck/picnic dinner to share

Mt. Garfild's Gearhart Mine trail leading to the 'Lemon Squeeze'

It will take us ~1/3 your normal Mt. Garfield ascent time to reach this evening's potluck location/ high point.

Official Moonrise 4.27 PM

Official Sunset 8.07 PM

This moon photo is 85% full.

Family Friendly (if the kids like to hike up to 1 hour, bring 'em)

Hike time will be about 45-60 minutes each way. The high point of our walk offers gorgeous sunset & moonrise views as well as a picnic spot overlooking all of the Grand Valley.

The hike . . .

will take us up the Gearhart Mine trail on Mt. Garfield. This is the less steep way that heads out to the right from the parking lot. The Lemon Squeezer is a narrow slot in rock that we will 'squeeze' through to get to a flat rock platform overlooking the entire valley. Round trip distance will only be 2 miles.

That crack is the actual 'Squeeze' and these people are sitting on the platform where we will potluck tonight. Thanks to gjhikes.com for borrow of photos and description.

As for dinner. .  . .

Someone please bring salad, someone else hors'd vours, a main course or 2; and, dessert. Please, no chips n dip. Also, sparkling cider or other --beyond the usual-- beverage(s). Adult beverages in moderation are OK.

WHEN/ WHERE:

Mt. Garfield trailhead at 6:15 PM so we can leave by 6:25, catching moon rise peeking above the Grand Mesa just a little before the time we reach our high point.

If you have to be a bit later in order to make it to this special evening, call to let me know and I can stay back to wait for you this time.

BRING:

• Sturdy shoes or light hiking boots

• Sun hat and sun screen (though we are partially in the shade on this hike)

• Insect repellent (have not been bad up here, but ...)

• Warm shirt or jacket for after dark cool-down

• Trekking poles if you like them. I may bring mine.

• Water or other beverages for dinner. Cup to drink from. Special or fancy beverages encouraged.

• Dinner (please plan to be part of a 3 or 4 course dinner).

• Your own plate, bowl, flatware, cup, serving spoons, paper towels/ napkins or bandana; plastic bag to carry down trash, recycling, dirty dishes, etc.

• Backpack large enough to carry your personal gear, your potluck contribution and other necessities. Please do not plan to carry a bunch of stuff in your hands. If need be, I can loan you a pack for this evening.

• Headlamp in case we get into some deep shadows on the walk down

DOGS:

On this hike we are on BLM land so that is OK. However, many or most dogs will not want to make it through the squeeze and the platform is large enough for 12-15 people (or more) but now with dogs roaming or jumping around. So please leave FIDO home or in the car (for a shorter walk before or after our formal hike).

RSVP:

Please post in your RSVP:

what you will bring for the group potluck dinner

So much fun! I definitely want to go back there and do that hike again. And what a great idea to have a potluck on the top. Everyone brought some great food and drinks!

I'll be out of town this weekend, so can't make the hike. :-( I will get the details sorted for Crags Crest ASAP. :-) Should be before the end of the weekend.

Perfect evening - warm but not too hot, no wind where we would not have liked to have had it. A dining platform large enough for 20 and we had only 17 diners. Lots of good food and beverages, laughs and views.

    Dang that was fun.

If it has rained too recently and the adobe clay on Mt. Garfield is too wet for hiking I have 1 or 2 alternative hike-potluck locations.

I was out on similar soils this morning. They were nearly bone dry then so YES, we will still go to Garf tonight.

Jeannie is happy to bring cold barley vegetable medley.
I'm sure you will want the recipe.

Doug, sorry I won't be able to make this hike. I have been in NY at a conference for the last week. Got in at midnight and heading to work today. Zero food in fridge and suspect my energy level after work will be marginal at best. Have a great time! Thinking about the Friday Moki steps hike.

I so very hope hope hope you will join us Friday for the moki and more hike, Jill. We will miss you this evening.

I'm hard pressed to think of something that won't get squished in my pack. How about cold homemade pizza as a main course or cheese and crackers as an hors de vours? With fruit? What do people want to eat?

    1 · August 4, 2014

    • Doug Van E.

Did you say HOME-MADE pizza. Oh that will get eaten, squished in your pack or not.

I will pack in a salad with some vinaigrette dressing. Is everyon brining their own utensils?

    1 · August 4, 2014

    • Doug Van E.

Yes, bring your own plate, fork, serving utensils (extra grocery deli forks to serve your salad), cup, paper towels/napkins, plastic grocery bag for trash. Since you will be in the deli section, Rita, please bring some extra plastic ware, containers and napkins for those who forget to bring their own utensils, please.

This sounds fun! I am not a chef either (at all)...can I just bring beverages? Perhaps a 1 bottle of wine and 1 bottle of sparkling cider?

    August 4, 2014

    • Doug Van E.

Kate bring beverage and grab something from the grocery store deli section: a salad, olive bar, etc. See you for the full moon!
