Named for its numerous switchbacks, Serpents Trail was built as the first road into the park. It offers pleasant views of No Thoroughfare Canyon as it snakes its way to the Upper Trailhead on Rim Rock Drive. I like to call it "Grand Junction's treadmill" because so many faithful walkers use it for their daily exercise routine.
This is a self-paced hike -- the group does not necessarily need to stay together since it's impossible to get lost on this trail. I may or may not go to the top each time, depending on what I have going on and how soon I have to be at work on a particular Monday.
Yes, I know 5:30 am is awful early, and it will be a major adjustment for me to be up and ready for the hike at that time. When we did this last summer, we found that it quickly became so hot that a 5:30 am start was necessary to beat the heat. So, I just decided to start at 5:30 from the beginning.
Admission: You need to pay the entry fee ($10 for cars) to get into Monument if you do not have park pass. Or, if you'd like to ride in with me, let me know and we can arrange a meeting spot outside the Monument.
Trailhead: Park either in the lot just inside the entrance to the Monument on the left side or in the Devils Kitchen parking lot by taking the first right after you enter the Monument. We will meet at the sign where the trail from the Devils Kitchen parking lot hooks up with Serpents trail.
