Westwater Canyon Colorado River

River Rafting & IKs == Class III-IV

7 AM Sunday, Oct. 28th

BEFORE YOU RSVP CALL JOHN,

the permit holder[masked]

This is the 4th Westwater permit WSA has this season. All our trips have been run as 1-day and have been a blast.

While this trip is open to the whole group, first RSVP preference must be given to those with rafts; especially those that can carry passengers. This permit has 8 spaces now but can be expanded if we have more interests and the expereinced raft captains neccesary to pilot rafts.

This is John Kellaher's permit and he has run Westwater dozens if not 100's of times. At the low water levels this time of year, John suggests:

  • rafts no larger than 16' and preferably no more than 14'
  • each raft should be light on passengers to be able to make the entry turn at Skull Rapid
  • he prefers raft captains who have been on Westwater before (but not required)
  • this water level is highly recommended for experienced hard shell or Inflatable Kayak (IK) paddlers

WHEN/WHERE:

If you are coming from GJ or western CO, meet at Starvin Arvin's at I-70 Fruita exit at 7 AM Sunday. Or, meet at the Westwater Ranger Station put-in at 9 AM. Please note in your RSVP which place you will meet.

BRING ON THE RIVER:

  • Boat if you have one (please state in RSVP what boat and how many passengers)
  • Spare oar or paddle, spare life jacket (Type III-V), first aid kit. Please state in RSVP which of these items you have/ can/will bring.
  • Motor for the rafts after the rapids (this is optional and please call John if you have one)
  • Wet or dry suit
  • HELMET (REQUIRED on any WSA river trip of class III or higher. Must  have tight fitting strap; we've had one fly off in a raft flip on a WSA trip.)
  • Hats (both for warm and cold)
  • Neoprene (or similar) gloves &/or mittens
  • River shoes (preferably not sandals. They are not suggested by some experienced boaters for wear on > class III whitewater)
  • Sunscreen, bug juice, bug head net, sun glasses
  • Dry bag for any lunch, clothes, camera, etc. For a camera - double or triple bag it.
  • Lunch, water

DOGS:

No longer allowed by BLM after March 1 this year.

Thanks to all for a great trip and for all the advice on running those 'scary' rapids. I really appreciate it and learned some valuable tips for the future. I've done some high adrenalin activities in my day and this one rates right up there!! Look forward to the next adventure with you all.

    It rocked! Woot woot!

It was my first time to run it by myself and fortunately I only used one "rescue coupon" in that blasted Skull Rapid and the Room-of-Doom")...Thanks Buck and Vaporman for getting me up-right and back in the saddle...!!...and thanks to all for making it such a fun experience for my "guest son" Daren and thanks for fishing him out.. twice.! AND on that note let me state the importance of the proper equipment. Like his father, Daren tried to run Skull on river right and we both got flipped..he, however, smacked his head(wearing a quality helmet) on Skull Rock as he went over, and he was then sucked under by the current but was able to swim out of it, aided by a good PFD. Had he not been wearing both, he might well have been knocked unconcious and drowned before rescue happened. A good helmet and a good life vest are critical on that stretch of water..! A wet or dry suit helps also...that friggin water was COLD..!!) It was another great day on a great river with a great bunch of people..!!

I got some goo pics of going thru the rapids and other going thru as well, but right now I'm limited to my iPhone and rare occasions to hop online while busy at work... Only been in my new GJ place for a few days and still waiting for CenturyLink to hook me up with a Wifi. =p

I'm still trying to purge the adrenalin from of my system. Wow what an incredible adventure. Wonderful group of river rats. Many thanks to John, Doug, Mark and Buck for their rafts and organization. Boy are my arms glad we had motors to get us through the flat spots. Big fun was had by all.

Did anyone get any great photos of the rapids?

    October 29, 2012

We had 15 people in 3 IKs, 2 solo canoes, 1 pack raft, 1 hard-shell kayak; and 3 big rafts and 1 hybrid (?>$#???) built and rowed by none other than 3 Doug. A swim here and there but other than that, a great autumn day. Temp started out at ~34 and rose to maybe 64 with crystal clear sky and blaze yellow cottonwoods. Innovator of the day awaerd goes to 3 Doug for his 'raft' (see photos). Hero if the day goes to Darren, 3 DOug's son visiting from Phoenix) for running the canyon in a 5#, 3.5' long pack raft. Pickers of Great 'lines' distinction is a tie between Buck in the raft and Bruce for us little boats in his solo canoe. Thanks to all for a great day. Water level was 2610 cfs (USGS gauge in-line) at 6 PM. Oh thanks to John and Buck for having 6hp motors that got us too and from the 'fun' quicker and with less effort. Based on out times today, it would seem that a motor is almost necessary for a 1-day trip this time of year.

Well plans have changed. I'll be there, but I'll be meeting you all at Starvin' Arvins. My tagalong managed to land a job interview and has to spend Sunday traveling instead of on the river. I'm sorry I feel like such a smuck. Maybe now there's an opening for someone who needed it?

I will pull my name from the list as I hasn't received a raft seat and have no wet suit. Like to try again in the spring and will have a wet suit by then.
I am selling a new Roxy suit size 10 (5'6' -5'8",[masked] lbs) has the labels still on, $75.
    Thanks

I think i will skip this one.... not a captain and only a little raft....

    October 25, 2012

  • Lisa B.

Anyone have an extra helmet for my tagalong Danny to use? Apparently he usually bums off his bud who is not currently in the state. I have no extras. Thanks in advance.

    October 24, 2012

    • Doug Van E.

If he is a kayaker who paddles the likes of Westwater, maybe a 'purchase' might be a good idea. A good helmet costs less than 2 large Hot Tomato pizzas and beer in Fruita.

      October 24, 2012

    • Lisa B.

He's an IKer, usually does more mild things, which is why a) he can usually get away with borrowing and b) he has opted to be a hood ornament on a raft this trip.

I was reminded by the folks at White Water West to check the label on my life jacket. Turns out the label is not longer readable and this will not pass an inspection. So I will be bringing one that will pass. Just a reminder.

I'm interested in sharing transportation. Who is going down that morning? I'm just installing a new roof rack on my car today and am unsure as to how well my kayak will ride. I'm interested in having a passenger join me or riding with someone who could carry me and my 9' inflatable kayak. Call me[masked]
looking forward to a FUN time on the water.

I'm interested in joining a raft; I have the necessary gear - Helmet throw bag lifevest ( no wetsuit).

I left my Dagger response back home but did bring my 16ft Mirage Revolution Hobbie kayak ( A great sit on top flat water boat for the Florida Keys and a ferry craft for fly fishing opposing banks without hiking in waders)

for the raft trip, Nick: I was informed Tuesday evening that there are 2 more spots on rafts just added into the trip. You MUST call the permit holder, John - # on the calendar page - to let him know so he has an accurate count for the permit process. Glad to have you along. See you Saturday. By the way, to hike Fiery Furnace you do not need a helmet and as for after the hike . . . I do not know of plans but do know some people are staying in the area so I am sure there will be happenings. See you at 8 AM at Arches visitor center.

Also, as a hardshell kayaker I feel discriminated against by the title of this outing. Where's the hardshell love? :P Just being a pest - don't mind me.

    October 23, 2012

  • Lisa B.

Who is that awesome hard shell kayaker posted up there? Hopefully John has room for her to tag along on this trip too! Playing the waiting game right now.

    October 22, 2012

OK awesome WW kayaker, what waiting game are you playing? Of course you are welcome to come along :-)

How cold do u think the water will be? Shirty wetsuit, full, or dry suit? Last weekend I did a 5 mile stretch of the Grand Canyon in a mostly swamped packraft in only a shorty and wind breaker and was fine and figure it can't be much colder than that. ;-)

Water level was 2440 cfs when we went in Sept. As of today it is 2650 and dropping slightly. I guess that could change some based on when irrigation water gets turned off. Does anyone know about irrigation dates and volumes?
