Snowshoeing/XC Ski at County Line Trails on Grand Mesa

Join us for

snowshoeing or cross-country skiing

on the County Line trails.

These are family and dog-friendly trails! The trailhead is shown on the Grand Mesa Nordic Council's map as being right around mile marker 30 on Hwy 65, just past/before the Grand Mesa Lodge and the Visitor Center, depending on which direction you're coming from. See the trail map here: www.gmnc.org.

The group can meet at the trailhead at 10:30 and then decide who's snowshoeing and who's XC skiing, bringing dogs, etc., and go from there. Let's plan on stopping for lunch or snacks, so bring a light lunch/snack in your pack, along with water and something to sit on that's cold/waterproof.

Today will be one of those days where it is warmer on top of the Grand Mesa than in Grand Junction. High of 35 up there today and sunny. Down here, a blustery 22.

I recently found a product called Musher's Secret, a natural and breathable barrier wax for protecting dog's paws. It was developed in Canada for sled dogs and I read a lot of very positive reviews on it before ordering it on Amazon. We are planning to try it soon on our Gracie's paws and hoping it is really good stuff (so not a product plug quite YET, but I will let you know!)

Great info, Suzy. If it works well that will definitely be good to share your findings with other dog owners in WSA.

Hi Suzy, I have used the Musher's wax on my Goldendoodle's feet - recommended by a shop in Winter Park. It was interesting... the first year it seemed to work well, so I bought more last year. Then it did not.. I'm not sure if it was the "lot"? But when Bella's paws were bleeding, I decided it was worth investing in the booties... Of course, we went through the learning curve with that, but are now most satisfied -- they have Vibram soles - and even got her liners! smiles! Curious to see what you discover...

I'll be skiing that day at Countyline with my husband and a couple of kids at 10:30am. Track skiing, snowshoeing, and skate lanes available there. You're welcome to join us. Dogs are welcome on that trail system.

Bryce Canyon has full moon hikes even during the winter but i know it' s more than a stone' s throw for you guys. It's a bit of a ways even for us in Vegas. But Brian Head is not too far from Bryce, and Cedar Breaks Natl Monument right next to Brian Head, is closed in the winter for cross country sking and snowmobiling, it could be a weekend trip! The summit at Brian Head is serene and magnificent when blanketed in white!

I've wanted to go to Bryce Canyon for a while now. I've seen pics of people snowshoeing there and it looks AWESOME! And I hear the star-gazing is magnificent, too. Hope we can make it out there one day!
