Spend 4 nights in the beautful Sneffels area west of Ridgway CO. The huts are 30$ a night per person. I am staying two nights in the Ridgway hut, then touring to the blue lakes hut for 2 nights, then out to the car.

Carpool will meet up at the Target parking lot in Montrose CO about 7am, drive to the trailheads and stage cars, then start our tour into the hut. You can come on XC, telemark, AT, snowshoes, any human powered winter travel option. There are many options available at each hut to explore.

RIDGWAY HUT:
Layout: The Ridgway Hut accommodates eight people via padded bunk style-beds. The hut includes a propane stove, propane lamp, wood stove, firewood, cookware, and utensils.

Water: In the winter, water is obtained by melting snow. In the summer, water is available from a nearby spring. Hut users are responsible for treating water with Iodine, Pump/Filter, or UV Scanner.

Location: Location: Ridgway Hut (10,200’) is located under the North Slopes of Reconnoiter Peak (12,980′) This hut sits in the midst of a spruce forest, but don’t let its forested seclusion deceive you. A wealth of high, rugged peaks lie directly above the hut. It is frequently used in conjunction with the Blue Lakes and Burn huts for multi-day adventures.

BLUE LAKES HUT:
Layout: The Blue Lakes Hut accommodates eight people via padded bunk-style beds. The hut includes a propane stove, propane lamp, wood stove, firewood, cookware, and utensils.

Water: In the winter, water is obtained by melting snow. In the summer, guests bring their own water or treat water from the nearby stream. Upon request, guests can pick up five gallon jugs at our office in Ridgway before their stay.

Location: The Blue Lakes Hut (9,380′) sits 1/4 mile up hill and west of summer trailhead for Blue Lakes and Mount Sneffels. The hut sits at the base of an old logging cut and the summit of Mount Sneffels towers above. It is frequently used in conjunction with the North Pole and Ridgway huts for multi-day adventures.

You must contact San Juan huts to make a reservation. www.sanjuanhuts.com

A really tough, steep climb, through 3+ feet of snow toward the end of the narrow route up (just under 2000 feet of elevation gain over 6.8 miles), VERY difficult for those who opted not to bring their snowshoes. Very small hut (16' x 16') with bare essentials. I was the only one who ventured out on Saturday to explore the trails and views above the hut. Everyone else (minus Curt, who skied back down to the TH Sat a.m. to guide Jean in, arriving just before nightfall) was either too sore and exhausted or sick (hope you feel better Sharon!). In retrospect, I shouldn't gone out on my own. We saw mountain lion prints in the snow on our way back down Sunday. The descent back down to the TH took 2.5 hours less than the almost 7 hours it took to get up there. This was the equivalent of hiking a Fourteener in snow, with backpacks! Wish we all could have enjoyed more time getting up to see the breathtaking views at the ridgeline and beyond. Hope Blue Lakes was good for Curt and Jean.

I am HOPING to organize a trip to an AWESOME hut up near Telluride, called High Camp Hut, the last week of March. I am negotiating cost and logistics with Cindy, the owner. March 27th-29th, hopefully. And the next full moon will be on the 27th! I am hoping to get this up on the site by the end of this week. Here's a teaser, folks.....this is a 3-story furnished CABIN....with a wood-fired SAUNA! Will be VERY reasonably priced for us. WOW! For some of us who would enjoy a few more creature comforts, niiiiiiice!

I know those days are mid-week and not easy for many of us to get off from work or other obligations, but this will possibly be one of the last winter "blasts" on our calendar. Hope we can pull it off.

Can everyone please post whether they are definitely going and what nights/huts they will be doing, so we all have a clearer picture of this? It would be nice if we could start making some more concrete plans with regard to meals and activities on each of the days. Me/Patrick and David/Sharon have been talking some about bringing food to share, but if we could talk and plan as a GROUP, that would be GREAT. Please respond here soon and we can follow up with emails/calls.

I am planning to bring a group-sized amount of 4-cheese mini raviolis with pesto dressing to have cold for a lunch or part of a dinner. I also got some vacuum-packed sliced Italian meats (salami, capppicola, etc.) we can have with cheese and crackers, if someone wants to bring those. Does anyone have a platypreserve wine bladder? Check these out at : http://www.backcountr.... Also, check out these awesome cocktail mixers to add your wines to, and freeze until slushy if you want: http://www.amazon.com.... I just got 3 of the peach Bellini mixers to try out with an exceptional sweet Riesling. Yummmmm!

I would also like to make some tasty chicken and cheese quesadillas for a lunch or part of a dinner. What do you think? And maybe a bacon, eggs, and pancake breakfast. We have a small camping 6-egg carrier, but would need several more for our number, planning for 2-3/person. I already bought some flour tortillas and some bacon. Could somebody bring a big bag of Mex mix shredded cheese? And we need some sweets/desserts!

Did a XC tour up the trail towards Ridgway hut. The trail is well traveled and packed down. If we do not get much snow before then you could almost walk most of the way there with no problems.

Curt, did you receive a packet from them? The guy said the leader of the group will have more info, GPS coordinates, etc. Has anyone else received anything further, via 'snail mail' after returning your signed Terms and Conditions form?

We will be going to the Ridgway hut only, staying Friday and Saturday nights.

    December 17, 2012

  • Suzy N.

We should find out tomorrow if Patrick can get Friday thru Sunday off for us to do the Ridgway hut. We will only be going to that one if we do go. So we will be coordinating with David for the carpooling, etc.

If some of us can't take 3 days off from work, would just a 2-night stay (Friday & Sat) at the Ridgway hut a possible option? Don't want to spoil others' 4-night arrangements if you will require people's commitments to both, though.

I have already made my reservation. You are more than welcome to book however many nights you would like. Coming up for the weekend only would be fine, will just have to arrange your own transportation up there.
