Thanksgiving Feast at Zion is less than 2 weeks away
Please read ALL THIS INFORMATION and do your part in advance to help make this, the 3rd annual thanksgiving in a national park, the very best one yet.

We will be camping on private land near the town of Virgin, UT.
Please bring some small bills cash to contribute for:

  • donation (there is a donation can) for use of the otherwise private and free camping (not BLM land I have learned after all)
  • $5-10/ each to help reimburse the people who bring turkeys, hams and other high cost items

If anyone has a trailer, camper or other camping vehicle, they are welcome and encouraged to bring/ come with that. As a matter of fact, if you have a vehicle with cooking capability, maybe you would be willing to do things like be the local coffee shop each morning (just a suggestion, not required), etc.

From UT Hwy 9 in the town of Virgin, turn left/ north onto Kolob Terrace Road. Drive 1.8 miles to a small road turning off to the right to a flat area along the river. We are going to try to secure a large area to the right of the entry road. If you do not like the looks of that entry road for your vehicle there is another small road off the paved road a few 1/10’s of a mile farther up the pavement that also drops down to the riverside flats.
Look for the tepee and the WSA banner.
Here is a Google map link to the route once you are in the town of Virgin. Zoom in on that map link and you will see the details in the map below.

For personal use, bring all your warm and cozy car camping gear and be sure to bring a folding camp chair to sit in at dinner. Bring hiking gear and an assortment of clothes.
Here is a link to the weather in Springdale, 13 miles from our camp location.
Please see these and other details on the web site at

This will be a POTLUCK FEAST.
Please contact Stacie Boyles to let her know what you want to bring or have her tell you what may still be needed. Stacie is the food coordinator if you signed up with WSA 801-391-4059
We will PLAN TO EAT ABOUT 3 PM ON THANKSGIVING DAY so we can enjoy the meal and the company but also get most of the stuff cleaned up & put away before dark
In addition to food we need a number of items for group benefit &/or use, including:

  • Large (and smaller) tables for food prep and serving
  • Stoves – prefer 2 burner type, either propane or white gas (if propane, be sure you have the proper fitting to connect bottle to stove)
  • FIREWOOD (and a hatchet or axe to split it)
  • Charcoal, a fire pan to control that and Dutch ovens to cook in
  • Groover-style camp toilet (if you have one you know what I am talking about. If you do not have one, do not worry. This will be our in-camp facility. If you want to use indoor facilities the town of Virgin is less than 5 minutes away) We can also use a hand washing station for the toilet area and one more for the kitchen.
  • Hand washing station for the toilet area and one more for the kitchen – if you have or can make one you know what I am talking about. If this is foreign to you, don’t worry about it.
  • Food storage containers- for leftovers (Tupperware, zip lock baggies, etc)
  • Trash bags and a trash receptacle- of some sort so our kitchen trash does not hit the ground
  • Lantern – if you have one it may be helpful if we end up cleaning up after dark
  • Dish washing set up (river trip style w 4 pans or buckets) I think this and a blaster to heat dishwater are already taken care of

There may be other things you think of that can be of use to the group effort that you can please bring

  • Doug Van Etten  for general information 970-433-4312
  • Sandy Crow food coordinator if you signed up with Backpackers 917-620-0078
  • Stacie Boyles food coordinator if you signed up with WSA 801-391-4059
