Just an FYI. I received this information from a friend who is working on Common Core issues. School districts can opt out of the curriculum but they cannot opt out of the mandatory testing (or the data collection that will be done under the guise of testing.) And ultimately the testing will drive the curriculum.
According to Rep Mike Duffey's office, school districts can opt out of the curriculum but they cannot opt out of the mandatory testing. I was told that by his office in an email.

Had a wonderful time this morning Dr. Keenan did a wonderful job explaining the topics, as well as answering our questions.

If you will recall, one of our members, Ilona Trommler, spoke of being raised under the Soviet education system. I'm not sure how old you were when you came here, but I wondered if you had any comments on this and what you think of the American education?

Dr. Keenan was very articulate and well-prepared to give us not just an overview of the impact of "Core Curriculum" program but the positives and negatives of it. He was non-specific about his personal feelings on the subject, something I would expect from an employee of the Westlake City Schools.
