HARD EIGHT & BOOGIE NIGHTS @ New Beverly Cinema on Friday 10/5, 7:30

Hard Eight

Revival theater New Beverly Cinema kicks off its P.T. Anderson retrospective with the master’s first two films: 1996’s Hard Eight and 1997’s Boogie Nights. Appearing in-person between the films will be Tom Jane, who played Dirk Diggler’s partner in crime in the “firecracker” scene. Advance tickets are on sale through Brown Paper Tickets. I can guarantee you that tickets will sell out in the next couple of days. There are 207 seats remaining out of 415 as of right now.

From the Rotten Tomatoes profile (82%) of Hard Eight:

John (John C. Reilly), a half-bright loser stranded in Reno, is down to his last few bucks when Sydney (Phillip Baker Hall), taking pity on him, buys him breakfast and offers him a few tips on making money in the casinos. Two years later, John has become Sydney’s partner, but his lack of common sense goes from problematic to dangerous when he falls in love with Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow), a cocktail waitress who isn’t above turning a few tricks when she needs to make money – and isn’t any brighter than John. Hall and Reilly, both first-rate character actors, are cast in rare leading roles, and Paltrow is cast strongly against type as a part-time prostitute with a serious lack of street smarts.

The entire cast is fantastic, from Philip Seymour Hoffman’s scene-stealing cameo to Philip Baker Hall’s solemn line readings.

And from RT’s profile (92%) on Boogie Nights:

Set in 1977, back when sex was safe, pleasure was a business and business was booming, idealistic porn producer Jack Horner aspires to elevate his craft to an art form. Horner discovers Eddie Adams, a hot young talent working as a busboy in a nightclub, and welcomes him into the extended family of movie-makers, misfits and hangers-on that are always around. Adams’ rise from nobody to a celebrity adult entertainer is meteoric, and soon the whole world seems to know his porn alter ego, “Dirk Diggler.” Now, when disco and drugs are in vogue, fashion is in flux and the party never seems to stop, Adams’ dreams of turning sex into stardom are about to collide with cold, hard reality. Featuring an amazing, award-winning cast, including Mark Wahlberg (“The Departed,” “We Own the Night”), Burt Reynolds (“Deliverance”), John C. Reilly (“Magnolia”), Julianne Moore (“Children of Men”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“State & Main”), Don Cheadle (“Talk to Me”), William H. Macy (“Bobby”), and many more.

Being a revival house that’s not near any shopping centers, parking is pretty much a street-only affair. It’s not terribly hard to find parking there in the evening as long as you're careful about reading the signs.

I didn't know that, but IMDB says yes—he played Ray Drecker in HUNG.
