Rodgers and Hammerstein?s sweeping musical version of James Michener?s novel premiered on stage in 1949 and was adapted for film in 1958. This screening is presented in association with Center Theatre Group, which is currently hosting the touring version of the recent Broadway revival, the first since the show?s premiere. It garnered seven 2008 Tony Awards? including Best Revival of a Musical.

Set against the backdrop of World War II, the story explores the romantic attraction and racial prejudice that bring together and pull apart several residents of the fictitious South Pacific island and members of the U.S. Navy. Featuring numerous well-loved songs, including Some Enchanted Evening, A Wonderful Guy, Happy Talk and Bali Ha?i, the film offers a rich opportunity to explore the changes in society since WWII, and the challenges of adapting stage musicals to the screen.

Starring Rossano Brazzi, Mitzi Gaynor, John Kerr, Ray Walston, Juanita Hall, France Nuyen. Directed by Joshua Logan. Produced by Buddy Adler. Screenplay by Paul Osborn. Adapted from the play by Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II and Logan, based on the novel Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener. Magna Theatre Corp.; Twentieth Century-Fox. 151 mins.
