Active Record and Data Modeling by Hannah Howard

In this workshop we will learn the basics of how data is modeled in a relational database, and how to interact with the database through Activerecord. We'll work on a simple app to keep track of a music catalog and use this example to introduce concepts like relationships, queries, and migrations. By the end, you'll have a working understanding of how to build data models to power your own apps.

The Rails view system is familiar to people who come from an HTML background. As a result, many beginning Rails programmers tend to stay focused on this component. But the core of any sizable Rails app is ActiveRecord and the model layer-- the “M” in MVC. Unfortunately, ActiveRecord is built on relational databases and SQL, concepts which are foreign to most beginning Rails programmers. After this workshop you will no longer be unfamiliar.

About Parking & Entry into the Building

Try the Park Me App

Oversee.net is located at 515 S. Flower St., at the corner of Flower and 4th St., just north of 5th St. on the 44th floor (Suite 4400).  Please be sure to bring a VALID Photo ID (driver’s license, ID card, passport, etc.), as you will need to present it at the Building Security Desk in order to gain access to the elevators.  VALID Photo ID is required for entry to the floors.

Parking in downtown LA can be cumbersome and cost money.  Oversee.net highly recommends taking forms of public transportation, as they are located 1.5 blocks NORTH of the 7th/Metro Train Stop (Red, Purple, Blue, or Expo Lines), as well as various bus routes that can drop you in front of the building.

If you must drive, we recommend parking in the LA Central Library Parking Lot, which is literally across the street at 524 S. Flower St.  The flat rate is $8 after 4pm, and is first-come, first-served basis.  You may also park at the City National Parking Structure, located at 500 S. Flower St., but is more expensive and charges by the hour. For those that wish to find street parking, please click on the URL below, which is a map of the meters and free spots after 6/7/8pm (please check all signs):
