For discerning thinkers, I wanted to post a link to a brilliant story written by a Science Fiction Hall of Famer back in 1951, a story that was the precursor to the movie "Idiocracy," but written by a serious sci-fi author and not a comic. It will have particular relevance to Mark's (of Mark and Judith) question about drivers that don't seem to understand merging.
But it's also a great cautionary tale for the thinking among us.
It can be read in its entirety here, or downloaded in PDF, .doc, .txt, etc. form.
The story is "The Marching Morons" by C.M. Kornbluth.
It is so prescient as to be frightening in its general accuracy.
I can't recommend highly enough that you give it a read.
(I should also note that it's rife with some of the prejudices of the time. But it's the basic concept and extrapolation that are worth the read.)
